Man of the Match: Ashley Clarke
Frome Town survived motorway holdups and freezing conditions to notch up a
superb 4-1 victory over Bedfont Green, extending their unbeaten run to 15 games
under Darren Perrin and rising to 5th place in the Zamaretto League.
Frome's defensive rotation continued as Tom Pass returned in goal, Jamie
Cheeseman returned from suspension, Greg Lake moved alongside him, Simeon
Allison moved back to left back and midfielder Dave Thompson dropped back to right
back. With Alex Lapham still suffering from the injury picked up at the weekend,
Ashley Clarke started his first league game for the club alongside Matt Peters, with
the normal wide midfield selections of Ben Thomson and Luke Ballinger. Mark Salter
and Mike Perrott completed the team as the twin strike force.
The match started at 8:10 pm due to the motorway hold up, and on a freezing cold
night that no doubt contributed to the low turn out, Frome took the lead in the 15th
minute as Ashley Clarke intercepted a pass and immediately set Ben Thomson free
on the left wing with a killer through ball that allowed the winger to make 20 yards
and finish with a clinical left foot shot from the edge of the area that gave the keeper
little chance.
Frome increased their lead in the 33rd minute as Salter was fouled in the centre
circle. The resulting free kick was taken by Thompson and the ball was floated into
the penalty area where both Salter and Cheeseman went up for the ball, with the ball
ending up in the net and Salter claiming the goal.
Defender Greg Lake scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute to
effectively seal the match as he slammed the ball home from 5 yards after a
Thomson corner was headed back across the box by Salter, and then returned into
the danger area by the head of Cheeseman.
The fourth goal arrived in the 66th minute as Perrott pulled the ball down in the
centre circle, then set off on a mazy run that culminated with a superb through ball
into the path of Ballinger who made ground on the right wing and then fired the ball
into the net from 15 yards for a trademark finish.
A consolation goal for Bedfont Green arrived in the 78th minute as a corner was
swung into the Frome area, the ball bobbled around for a bit and was eventually
backheeled into the goal by Bedfont's Chris Henry, the ball squeezing between the
legs of Matt Peters on the Frome line. This is the first goal that Frome have conceded
in 10 hrs and 18 minutes of play and the record run is testament to the spirit of the
side.
Late substitutions were Millard and Carr on for Salter and Perrott, and coach Mike
Kilgour made a rare appearance as he replaced Cheeseman towards the end of the
match.
Ashley Clarke was chosen as Man of the Match on his First Team full debut, and it's
a tribute to the young player that he has patiently waited for his chance, and took it
with both hands when it arrived.
This result sets up the weekend rather nicely as Frome are due to host unbeaten
league leaders Windsor and Eton at the AlderSmith Stadium on Saturday. Weather
permitting, and in this form, it should be a match to remember.
