Man of the Match: Luke Ballinger
Somerset Premier Cup holders Frome Town surrendered their trophy as they were
easily beaten by Bridgwater in a game that never really got going.
On a cold, still night and on a good pitch, the match started quietly, with the only
moment of note being in the 5th minute as a Peters 25 yard left foot shot just
screamed over the bar.
Bridgwater's first attack of the night happened in the 21st minute and was tidied up
by Pass, but they bizarrely went ahead one minute later as a Bridgwater forward cut
into the box, fell to the ground and the play was interrupted by the referee's whistle.
As everyone in the ground (including all the players on both sides ) looked towards
the referee with a puzzled look, they realised that he had awarded a penalty to
Bridgwater for some infringement that will forever remain a mystery. The Frome
management and players protested strongly, but Pepperrel stepped up and calmly
slotted the ball past Pass to give Bridgwater the lead.
The goal definitely sparked some much needed life into the game, the crowd woke
up and the next ten minutes was pretty frantic with numerous free kicks being given.
Bridgwater went close in the 26th minute as Ballinger hooked the ball of the danger
area with an overhead kick, and then Pass brought off the save of the match in the
34th minute as Young latched onto a slick through ball to turn and shoot from 15
yards.
The second half saw Bridgwater go close in the 46th minute as a corner was
scrambled off the Frome line, but then the match settled into a scrappy encounter
punctuated by numerous free kicks. Frome managed their first shot on target in the
68th minute as Ballinger charged the ball down, played it to Allison, received the ball
and brought a comfortable save from Buckingham with a 20 yard shot.
Bridgwater went close in the 71st minute as a free kick caused problems, and they
increased their lead one minute later as a right wing corner evaded everyone
allowing Trowbridge to score with a left foot volley from the far post.
Frome's only real bright spot of the night came in the 73rd minute with the return of
the inspirational Jon Crowley to the pitch after a 12 month absence due to a broken
leg sustained in a Somerset Premier Cup match against Bath City last year.
After increasing their lead, Bridgwater just shut the game down, Frome failed to work
out a way of causing them problems and the game never threatened to become a
contest from that point. Bridgwater's captain Chris Young was sent off in the final
minute as he kicked the ball away, received a second yellow for dissent and was
shown the red card.
Luke Ballinger was presented with the man of the match award by representatives of
H&B Tyres who sponsored the match.
