Frome Town and Gosport produced a very entertaining end of season match that eventually ended in 1-1
draw, but the score could have been a lot higher.
With only Matt Minnis out with injury, Frome were able to start the match with almost a full squad, and on a
very pleasant sunny day on a good pitch, they started brightly as Salter was set loose by Peters only to be
denied by a last ditch tackle as he raced into the Gosport area.
Frome took the lead as Hulbert repeated the feat in the 9th minute, but this time the last ditch tackle missed
the ball and took the man, and the referee pointed immediately to the penalty spot, allowing Ballinger to drive
the ball low to Brown's left, although the tall keeper guessed right and only just failed to get his fingers to the
ball.
A mix up in the Frome defence in the 12th minute allowed Gosport's Wooden to nip in between Fullam and
Pass, and Pass did very well to retrieve the situation by diving low to push the ball out for a corner. The
corner also caused problems, end in Pass tipping the ball over the bar, and then having to punch clear from
that corner, but Frome survived and Hulbert blazed over the bar a few minutes later as he again caused
problems on the left wing. Peters broke up a Gosport attack in the 21st minute and set Hulbert free again on
the left, but this time his first shot was charged down, and his second was well saved by Brown in the visitors
goal.
This was now turning into a very good game, full of attractive football from both sides, and Gosport had the
chance to level in the 33rd minute as Bennett chased a long goal kick into the Frome area, only to be held
back by Fullam as he cut inside looking to shoot. Howes took the penalty kick, but Pass guessed correctly
and produced an excellent save low to his left to parry the ball to safety.
The match continued in style for the rest of the half, but both defences held out and at half time it was finely
balanced with either side the possible victors. Frome again started brightly, but in the 49th minute, Ballinger
was penalised for a back pass, resulting in an indirect free kick 2 yards inside the Frome penalty area, but the
wall did its job and shot was safely cleared.
Gosport now took control for a period, and a header off the line saved Frome as a Pass punch failed to find
any distance, but he did well to deal with a 30 yard effort in the 55th minute. Again the pendulum swung, and
Frome started to apply pressure on the Gosport defence, with Hulbert running from his own half in the 69th
minute, then finding Salter in the box who produced a left foot shot that just cleared the far post.
Thomson produced an excellent run and left wing cross in the 72nd minute that saw him get his head to the
subsequent return, then Perrott just managed to win the race to the ball with Brown, only to see the ball
trickle over the line before he play it back into the area. Hulbert repeated the feat a minute later, but this time
the long legs of Brown dispossessed him as he cut back inside looking for an angle to shoot.
Thomson screamed a 30 yarder over the bar in the 82nd minute and Brown again saved with his legs at the
feet of Perrott in the 89th minute, but the ball then immediately broke back up the field to find Gosport's
Turvey with a run in on goal, and this time he produced a cool finish to drive the ball low into the corner from
20 yards to equalise.
Both sides looked for the winner, but the gilt edged chance came in the 94th minute as Perrott side footed a
Thomson left wing cross onto the outside of the Gosport post.
So the match finished as a draw, which was probably about right, and the Frome players were applauded
from the pitch by the crowd after an excellent season which saw them finish in 6th place in their first season
in the Southern League Division 1.
Jamie Cheeseman was presented with the MOM award by Barry White of New Windows who had sponsored
the match.
