Man of the Match: Jamie Cheesman
Goals from Mark Salter and Ricky Hulbert enabled Frome Town to finish a tough
week with a 2-1 victory over a useful Hungerford side, making it two wins and a draw
in the last six days and keeping up the challenge for a place in the promotion play
offs.
Hungerford had proved a tough nut to crack in a 0-0 draw back in December, and the
match started very evenly, with the midfields tending to cancel each other out and
chances few and far between. Hulbert shot over the bar with a long range effort in the
3rd minute and Day headed past the post from a corner in the 8th minute, but it
looked like goals would be hard to come by until Frome broke the deadlock in the
24th minute, when a Thomson right wing corner was won by Cheeseman who
headed the ball back across the goal to enable Salter to head home from close range
to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
The match then settled again, with no side really taking control. A 30 yard Perrott free
kick in the 29th minute just cleared the visitor's crossbar, Hungerford's Clark
produced a 20 yard shot that whistled past the post in the 33rd minute and a period
of Hugerford pressure produced three successive corners shortly afterwards, but all
were dealt with by the Frome defence. The half finished with Frome just about
shading it, and 1-0 was probably a fair scoreline.
The second half started at pace, with Hulbert hitting the side netting a few seconds
after the restart, but he doubled Frome's advantage two minutes later as Cheeseman
won the ball in the centre circle, produced a perfect ball hit with the outside of his foot
to find Ballinger wide on the right. Ballinger looked up and immediately produced a
looping cross that found the unmarked Hulbert lurking on the far post and the striker
gleefully knocked the ball into the net from 10 yards, with Hungerford appealing for
an offside decision.
The next few minutes were manic, with Pass tipping a 25 yard shot round the post in
the 49th minute, and dealing with another long range effort one minute later that was
heading for the top corner. Frome came straight back and Salter set up a shooting
chance for Thomson that whistled over the bar with a 25 yard volley. Frome then took
control for a few minutes and started attacking in waves, but the visitors held out and
started to assert themselves in midfield.
A free kick on the left wing led to the Hungerford goal in the 64th minute as the ball
was played inside to Gosling who hammered the ball into the far top corner of the net
from fully 30 yards out. Frome came back and Cheeseman had a golden opportunity
in the 79th minute as he arrived unnoticed at the far post and was found by a
Thomson corner, but he could only volley the ball high from a tight angle.
With 15 minutes to go, it seemed like the exertions of the week started to catch up on
Frome, and Hungerford started to control the ball in midfield, playing in the Frome
half and looking odds on for the equaliser. One period of sustained pressure led to
four corners in quick succession, but the Frome defence held out even though the
ball seemed to be coming back as quickly as they managed to clear it.
Alex Lapham made a welcome return from injury in the 86th minute, and Frome
looked to soak up the pressure and catch Hungerford on the break, but as the match
drew to a close it was Hungerford that nearly grabbed the equaliser as a long throw
in produced a shooting chance for Gosling but he managed to volley over the bar
with almost the last kick of the game.
Jamie Cheeseman was awarded the man of the match award by "Raves from the
Grave" who had sponsored the game.
