Man of the Match: Luke Ballinger
In their first season in the Zamaretto Southern League, Frome Town ensured that no
team could complete " the double" over them as they produced a very good
performance to defeat Mangotsfield 2-0, the last side side in the league that could
achieve this feat.
With Jamie Cheeseman missing a rare match through injury, Craig Fullam partnered
Callum Henry in the centre of defence, with Sim Allison and Mike Reaney starting at
left and right back respectively, a pairing that has looked very sound during recent
matches, and it remained to be seen how they would handle the threat posed by
Mike Meaker who had scored a hat trick only two days earlier.
Frome started the brighter, and in the 5th minute, an excellent left wing run and cross
by Hulbert found Ballinger unmarked on the far side, but the winger screwed his low
shot wide of the far post from 20 yards. Ballinger again created problems in the 10th
minute as a right wing cross / shot was just tipped over by Alexander in the visitor's
goal.
Frome took the lead in the 14th minute as a high, looping left wing cross fell almost
vertically into Mangotsfield's six yard box. Salter and Alexander both went up for the
ball, with the keeper managing to get his hand to the ball and palm it away before
falling to the ground, the ball ran straight out to Ballinger who had time to compose
himself and then drive the ball into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Mangotsfield
complained bitterly to the referee that a free kick should have been awarded for a
foul on the keeper, but the officials were having none of it, the goal was awarded and
a yellow card was shown to a defender for dissent.
Frome increased their lead in the 22nd minute as an Osman low shot following a
right wing corner was deflected for a left wing corner. Ballinger trotted across to take
the corner, and, making use of the wind direction, he produced the perfect inswinging
corner that flew unerringly into the far top corner with apparently nobody getting a
touch on the ball for a touch of real class.
At two down, Mangotsfield came back into the game and started to have more
possession in the Frome half, but apart from the occasional free kick, they never
really troubled the Frome defence until the 43rd minute when Meaker got to the dead
ball line and whipped back a low cross that Reaney cleared off the line with an
excellent defensive header.
The second half saw Mangotsfield pushing up on Frome, but it left space behind the
defence for Frome to attack into and Hulbert caused problems in the 49th minute, an
excellent Allison run in the 51st minute set up a shooting chance for Osman, and an
brilliant Ballinger cross in the 57th minute saw Salter just fail to beat a defender to
the ball with the header just going over the bar. It wasn't all Frome during this period,
and Mangotsfield had several corners and long range shots, with Reaney clearing a
shot off the line in the 62nd minute.
Hulbert produced a great thirty yard run in the 74th minute that beat two defenders
and resulted in a shot just past the post, and Thomson repeated the feat in the 87th
minute. Thomson went two better in the 92nd minute as a mazy run saw him leave
four defenders floundering in his wake, and his perfect final ball to Ballinger saw the
first time shot bury itself in the side netting as he looked for his hat trick.
The final event of the match saw Mangotsfield go close from a corner, but the final
whistle blew at the end of a very controlled, competitive performance from Frome.
Luke Ballinger was presented with the Man of the Match award by Clive Lewis who
had sponsored the match.
