Frome Town ensured that they would finish in 6th place in their first season in the Southern League, as they
eventually triumphed over Taunton Town in a match where they took a long time to get going, but finished
with a flourish.
Darren Perrin started the match with Dave Thompson playing at right back for the first time, allowing Sim
Allison to play at number 8 in place of Luke Ballinger who was still nursing an ankle injury picked up on
Saturday.
On a pitch that looked remarkable after a long hard season, the match kicked off with plenty of endeavour
from both sides, but very little in the way of incident as both sides seemed to favour the aerial ball and both
defences looked adept at dealing with this tactic. Frome had a clear chance in the 24th minute as Peters free
kick found the head of Henry, but the header evaded the far post by a foot or so.
Taunton took the lead in the 29th minute with the first moment of real quality in the match as left winger rice
took on Winter, cut inside and unleashed a superb 30 yard curling right foot shot that just evaded the fingers
of Perrin as it curled just inside the far post. The goal lifted Taunton and they entered their best spell of the
match, getting the ball on the floor, playing it around and generally causing Frome problems, with Salter
becoming increasingly isolated up front.
However, they failed to add to their lead in this period, and Frome almost sneaked an
equaliser against the run of play in the 44th minute as Perrrott produced a right wing cross onto the head of
Salter that allowed Allison to show from close range, only to be denied by a good block from McGrath.
At half time, the home crowd were expecting more from their side in the second half, but it failed to
materialise, and Taunton went close in the 49th minute when a last ditch Henry tackle just saved the day,
and Perrin did well to stop a stinging shot from Rice in the 54th minute.
As the home crowd started to make their feelings known, Lapham replaced Salter, Perrott moved forward and
immediately they started to look more lively, with Allison starting to run at defenders with more confidence
and causing Taunton problems with right wing crosses in the 56th and 60th minutes. Taunton started
defending with a higher line, managing to catch the Frome forwards offside several times, but the momentum
was building and the crowd were starting to stir.
Taunton again went close in the 69th minute and only a header off the Frome line and sharp save from Perrin
denied them, but on the whole, Frome were now starting to play the ball around with urgency and
commitment, and this was rewarded in the 75th minute as a long throw in from Reaney was headed back by
Hulbert and Perrott buried the ball in the far corner of the net from 20 yards as he raced into position to get
the shot in.
Peters did well in the 81st minute as he beat the offside trap by chasing his own pass, resulting in a chance
that Allison just about forced over the line, but the play was pulled back for a foul by Hulbert on a defender.
With both sides looking for the winner, Perrin just managed to deal with a 30 yard screamer from Piper, with
the clearance allowing Perrott to run 60 yards to the deadball line only for Fisher to just gather the low cross.
Frome's winner came in the 89th minute as Hulbert chased a ball to the deadball line,
managed to pull it back low across the area, with Thomson arriving just in time to tap the ball over the line
from 6 yards out to give Frome the three points and leave Taunton probably feeling a little hard done by.
Callum Henry was awarded the Man of the Match award by representatives of Clive Lewis Financial who had
sponsored the match.
