Man of the Match: Ricky Hulbert
Frome Town showed how much they have improved over the season as they more
than matched second place AFC Totton, with the final 1-1 scoreline being a fair
result on the night.
New signing Jack Winter played his second match at right back, and with Matt Peters
recovering from a suspected foot injury, the team line up was very similar to the one
that had done so well at Abingdon on Saturday, but a much sterner test was
expected.
Totton were the first to show as a 3rd minute chance fell to Sherborne, but the ball
was scrambled away by the Frome defence, and two minutes later Ballinger shot into
the arms of Barfoot from 25 yards as the game got off to a bright start. Frome thought
they had taken the lead in the 9th minute as Hulbert finished off a flowing move with
a right foot shot that found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for
offside.
The game settled into a very even encounter that saw both sides look to attack, with
Totton starting to knock the ball about and Frome using the pace of their wingers to
good effect, but neither side were able to find the killer ball, and both defences
restricted chances to a minimum.
However, Totton took the lead in the 36th minute with their first real chance of the
match as a right wing cross came in from the dead ball line, allowing Taylor to strike
the ball home with a right foot shot from 10 yards that Pass was only able to parry
into the net. Frome came back, but were unable to carve out any real chances until
the 44th minute when Hulbert trapped the ball with his chest and hit a 25 yard dipping
volley that just cleared the visitors cross bar.
Frome definitely started the second half with more purpose and Ballinger tested
Barfoot in the 47th minute with a shot into the top corner of the goal that the keeper
just palmed out for a corner. Ballinger again caused problems in the 50th minute, but
this time his low shot was cleared at the near post by a defender. With Frome in the
driving seat now, the equaliser came in the 52nd minute as an Osman free kick was
lobbed into the box, allowing Salter to get up and just the glance the ball towards the
goal. The slight deflection confused Barfoot and the ball was only partially cleared,
allowing Hulbert to strike the ball into the net from 12 yards with a right foot volley
that bounced just before the line.
With the crowd behind them, it looked as if Frome might go and get the winner, but
Totton showed their composure and class and started to take the game to Frome with
a period of possession and territory. Taylor blazed the ball over the Frome bar from
25 yards in the 60th minute, but then Frome came straight back and Perrott got onto
the end of a cross to head the ball towards the corner, bringing a save from Barfoot.
In the 65th minute a Totton left wing cross and flicked header set up Taylor and he
blasted the ball into the net, only for the celebrations to be cut short by the linesman's
flag. Frome came back and Ballinger started to cause problems on the left wing, but
a poorly taken Frome free kick in the 77th minute enabled Totton to break quickly and
as Pass cam way out of his goal to intercept, he was beaten to the ball and only
desperate defending saved the day.
Reaney replaced Osman in the 79th minute and Allison moved up to right wing where
his pace started to cause a few problems, and the final ten minutes saw both sides
trying to win the game, with half chances falling to the Frome forwards and several
Totton corners in quick succession gave the Frome defence some problems to deal
with, but they held out and the game finished in a very creditable draw.
Ricky Hulbert was chosen as Man of the Match by the Frome Medical Practice who
had sponsored the match.
