After performing heroics in the 0-0 draw at Windsor & Eton on Saturday, Frome Town
returned to London three days later and deservedly came away with all three points
after an excellent 3-0 win over Uxbridge.
With Callum Henry pulling up with an injury in the warm up, Craig Fullam returned to
centre back, but apart from that one change, the side was the same as the one that
had played on Saturday. Could the team extend their unbeaten league run under
Darren Perrin to 10 successive matches?
In a howling wind, the game started slowly with both sides struggling to adjust to the
conditions, but Frome were the first to settle and won a corner after 10 minutes that
was safely gathered by Watkins. Three minutes later came Fromes best chance of
the half as the ball fell kindly for Hulbert who should have done better with only
Watkins to beat, but the shot went wide.
Uxbridge had their first serious attempt on goal after 25 minutes with Thomas firing
just over, and in the 37th minute Ballinger's mazy run outwitted 3 defenders and
culminated in an excellent cross which just eluded Hulbert. As the half wore on,
Uxbridge probably finished the first half the stronger, with two headed attempts, one
just wide & the other easily dealt with by Jones.
It had really been a half that was peppered with errors, mis-placed passes & only
glimpses of football, the strong gusting wind making controlled football almost
impossible, with the elements seeming to be the only likely winners.
Frome were a little fortunate in the 47th minute half, as an Uxbridge free kick on the
edge of the Frome box, was parried by Jones, only for the rebound to be fired home,
but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul much to the relief of the travelling
support, who made up a good proportion of the crowd.
This let off spurred Frome into playing some better football, stringing passes together
and keeping the ball on the ground. Cheeseman just failed to connect with a 55th min
Thomson corner, but now Frome were beginning to attack at will, with Ballinger
outstanding.
The opening goal looked like it was coming, and it duly arrived 3 minutes later as he
ran inside his marker and struck the ball sweetly across Watkins into the far corner of
the net
Almost from the restart, Frome surged forward again & Hulbert was pulled back as
he prepared to shoot, the referee awarded a penalty and showed a red card to
Howell for fouling the attacker as the last defender. However, after consulting the
linesman, the referee changed his mind and awarded a free kick just outside the area
which ended up hitting the defensive wall.
Minnis replaced Hulbert after 70 mins, and 2 minute later Ballinger increased the lead
as another superb run ended with him unleashing a shot which fired Frome into a 2-0
lead. Thompson replaced Lapham before the restart.
In the 80th min Smilie was booked for flooring Ballinger & the resulting free kick was
gathered at the 2nd attempt. In the 87th min Minnis was put through on goal but
pulled up injured & was stretchered off.
In the 3rd min of injury time a great run & cross by Lake was touched home by Salter
to emphasise Frome's superiority. All in all, a great second half and consecutive
clean sheets.
Another excellent performance from this Frome Team, which now extends their
unbeaten league run to ten games and lifts them to eigth place in the table. Luke
Ballinger was awarded the Man of the Match award, and his rich goalscoring run has
now made him Frome's top scorer for the season so far.
