The difference would have been much greater but for a superb performance from man of the match debutant goalkeeper Daffyd Jones who pulled off a string of fine saves. With Craig Fullam suffering from an ankle injury, Andy Crabtree played Matt Cowler at centre half and moved Sim Allison to right back, with Dan Harvey starting at striker to add some height and physical presence to the forward line. The inintial sparring in the first 15 minutes was very even, but as the half wore on, it became apparent that VTFC were adept at using the long ball to find their strikers, and that the strikers knew how to win the ball and play it off to any number of players running into space. On a bouncy pitch with the grass cut short, the Frome defence were going to have their hands full. As the pressure started to build, debutant keeper Jones showed his class by palming out a wickedly struck corner from under his crossbar in the 18th minute, and two minutes later, he did well to save a low shot from Hunt. The 22nd minute brought a VTFC penalty as a long kick into the Frome area led to a bout of head tennis, and Cowler was adjudged to have lent on Spinney, with the referee immediately pointing to the penalty spot. Up stepped Gibbens to take the kick, but Jones guessed correctly and brought off a stunning save, diving full length to his right and pushing the ball out for a corner. As the corner was swung in, Jones was forced to make another full length save at the far post, and when the danger was cleared, he was again in action 3 minutes later to save a header from Gibbens. Frome suffered yet another setback in the 34th minute as Greg Lake seemed to have a recurrence of his knee ligament problem, and was replaced by Steve Hunt, with Allison now moving to left back, Peters to right back and Hunt to right wing. Jones again saved Frome in the 37th minute as he performed miracles to tip a shot onto the bar, and repeated the feat in the 39th minute as Mason pulled the ball back to Brewster who hit a screaming drive from 30 yards. VTFC appealed strongly for a penalty in the 40th minute, but it was Frome that actually finished the half with the best chances as Piotrowski brought a save from Webber in the 40th minute, and a good move between Gomes and Harvey led to Piotrowski again bringing a save from the home keeper. At 0-0 at half time, the travelling fans couldn't quite believe their luck, and after the re-start, Jones again performed miracles in the 49th minute to bring off a save from a point blank header from Hunt. However, the luck ran out in the 54th minute as a VTFC free kick taken from just outside the box was viciously curled towards the far post. Jones managed to get a hand on the ball, but it bounced up off of the base of the far post and was easily headed home by Byron Mason. A long range shot by Gomes in the 60th minute was spilled by substitute keeper O'Rourke, and Piotrowski almost poked the ball home as he pounced on the rebound, but VTFC made the game safe in the 64th minute as a perfect struck, pacey cross from the right wing found the head of Warren Hunt to power the ball home from 6 yards, giving Jones no chance. VTFC really turned on the style now, and their third goal arrived in the 74th minute as a left wing throw in was quickly worked across the field, and Gibbens toe poked the ball home for a goal that trickled into the far corner, with Jones totally wrong footed. A flowing Frome move in the 80th minute involving Clarke and Gomes led to a shooting chance for Hunt, but O'Rourke saved and did very well to save the ball at the second attempt as Hunt attempted to roll the ball into the empty net. Daffyd Jones was awarded the man of the match award for an outstanding debut in goal.
