Frome  Town 2 VTFC 2 Salter (86) Barry Mason (23) & (55) Hulbert (88) Crowd:189 Man of the Match: Simeon Allison Frome Town dramatically snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat as Mark Salter and Ricky Hulbert poached two late goals in the space of two minutes to eventually share the points with an impressive VTFC side. The last time these two sides met back in September, VTFC played Frome off the park and could have won by a cricket score, so it was with interest that the crowd of 189 gathered to see how the new Frome side would deal with one of the top scoring sides in the league. The match started with both sides competing evenly and it took until the 15th minute for the first chance to arrive as Salter flicked on a Ballinger right wing cross with his head, but the ball just evaded the far post. Frome probably had the edge in territory and possession at this stage, but VTFC went very close in the 21st minute as Mason outpaced Fullam on the right wing and produced a low cross that flew quickly across the face of the goal evading everyone. The ball was immediately played back in from the right wing allowing Gibbens to flick the ball just wide of the far post. The warning wasn't heeded though, and two minutes later, Mason again found space on the right, but this time he cut inside and unleashed a low right foot shot that Perrin could only parry into the net to give VTFC a 1-0 lead. The game returned to it's midfield stalemate, and the only real incident of note in the remainder of the first half was in the 31st minute as Hulbert attacked from the right wing, with his right foot shot just being palmed away by O'Rourke in the visitor's goal. The second half saw Perrin survive a scare in the 5th minute as he just managed to clear the ball, but saw it run directly to a VTFC player who luckily shot straight at the stranded keeper and allowed him to retrieve the ball. The 55th minute saw VTFC extend their lead as a routine lob over the Frome defence was latched on to by Ashford, who controlled the ball, turned and played it into the path of Mason who fired home from 18 yards for his second of the game with a low right foot shot into the corner of the net. With a comfortable 2-0 lead, VTFC started to push up and play the game in the Frome half, and Frome were restricted to rare break away attacks. Cheeseman was kept busy at the heart of the Frome defence dealing with the aerial bombardment, and it looked as if Frome would struggle to get anything out of the game. However, Frome kept trying and a right wing free kick in the 64th minute saw Salter get up and nod the ball into the path of Cheeseman who poked the ball towards goal from 6 yards only to see O'Rourke make a point blank save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. The 75th minute saw a good chance for Frome as Ballinger got to the dead ball line and pulled back a cross that just evaded Salter, but the ball found it's way back to Osman who blazed wide from 20 yards out. One minute later and a flicked header from Hulbert sent Ballinger on his way, and as he was being closed down by the defender, he produced a lob that was heading into the goal, only to see O'Rourke arch backwards to just flick the ball over the bar. As the match progressed, the Frome players seemed to moving more onto the front foot, and running at the VTFC defence, and it eventually paid off in the 86th minute as Ballinger caused problems on the left wing, played the ball back to Dave Thompson who produced a teasing ball into the box that saw both Salter and Hulbert go up for it, with one of them producing the header that flew into the net. Most of the crowd thought that Hulbert had got the final touch, but it was confirmed after the match that it was in fact Salter who had scored. Frome decided to go for broke now, and Cheeseman was thrown up front, producing large shouts for a penalty as he was just beaten to the ball by O'Rourke, but the referee rightly waved play on the ball went out for a corner. As the 88th minute corner was swung in, Cheeseman managed to get a foot to the ball and flick it up onto the top of the cross bar, and as it came back into play, Hulbert was the first to react and rose to nod the ball into the net from close range to make the score 2-2. The crowd were pinching themselves now, and as Frome looked for the winner, VTFC also decided that they had better get one, and the last few minutes were nail biting for Frome as they survived several corners that were close run things. Howver Frome held on for the draw and this now means that if Frome can avoid defeat on Thursday at home to Mangotsfield then no side in will have "done the double" over them in their first season in the Southern League. Simeon Allison was chosen as Man of the Match by manager Darren Perrin on behalf of Travel Angels who sponsored the match.
