Frome Town and Yate Town repeated the 0-0 scoreline from their encounter
earlier in the season in an even game that produced few chances.
With the Yate pitch showing signs of wear and on a baked hard surface that
played a large part in the way the game was played, the game kicked off in
unbroken sunshine which made a pleasant change for the spectators but
made it hard work for the players.
After a bright start by both sides, in the 9th minute, Luke Ballinger hobbled
off with an ankle injury to be replaced by Alex Lapham for Frome. The 10th
minute saw a long range shot from Thomson whistle past the far post, and
Peters almost got on the score sheet one minute later as he charged down a
clearance by Dempsey with the side of his face, only for the ball to bobble
past the post.
Peters was again unlucky with a looping 40 yard effort that dipped just over
the crossbar in the 20th minute, but with the pitch making close control
very difficult, both sides tended to favour the aerial route, and chances
became restricted to long range efforts, few of which caused the keepers
man problems. Frome's best chance came in the 38th minute as Lapham
and Salter combined to set Hulbert free, but the strikers first time shot flew
well wide of the goal from 15 yards.
Perrott went close in the 41st minute as a punched clearance from Dempsey
allowed a long range shooting chance into an unguarded goal, but again the
chance went wide of the far post.
In the 2nd minute of the second half, Lapham brought a good save from
Dempsey as he produced a crisp shot from 15 yards, but Frome were a little
lucky to avoid a penalty in the 52nd minute as a header from Henry seemed
to bounce up and strike Allison on the arm, but nothing was given.
Yate went close in the 59th minute as an inswinging corner allowed an
unmarked forward a clear header on goal, but again the ball failed to find
the target. The 69th minute saw a good Frome left wing move give Peters a
shooting chance, but the ball was nicked off his toe at the last moment, and
a Reaney long throw in the 83rd minute led to a period of Frome pressure
that ended with a Lapham shot into Dempsey's midriff.
Yate had the chance to win the match in the 88th minute as Pass punched
clear a shot, only for the ball to be met by a diving header, but again it
sailed harmlessly over the crossbar. Frome probably had the better of the
last few minutes of the match, but again failed to really test the home
keeper.
Alex Lapham was chosen as Frome's Man of the Match for a good return to
the side after an extended injury lay-off.
