Frome Town responded to their disappointing result in the week in the best possible way as
they produced an outstanding performance to totally dominate Abingdon, and the 5-0
scoreline could easily have been much larger.
Frome started the match in the best possible way and in the 3rd minute, a Ballinger left wing
free kick curved wickedly into the Abingdon area, Cheeseman rose to head the ball and
though Allaway in the visitors goal did well to save with his legs, the ball immediately
rebounded to Cheeseman who calmly stroked the ball into the net from 10 yards out.
Frome almost doubled their lead in the 7th minute as a Perrott header from a corner was was
just headed out from under the crossbar, only for the ball to be played back into Ballinger who
hit a volley that Allaway did well to push away for another corner.
Frome really started to dominate in this period with classic wing play passing football always
stretching the Abingdon defence. A clash of heads in the 16th minute led to Chris Lewis being
substituted by Darren White, and three minutes later a Ballinger volley from a Thomson left
wing cross again required a good save to prevent the goal.
Abingdon had their first attack of the match in the 25th minute as a long range shot went past
the post, but Frome doubled their lead two minutes later as White got his head to a Ballinger
free kick and the flicked header was fumbled by Allaway and the ball landed in the net.
Matt Smith replaced Matt Peters in the 30th minute due to injury and immediately set
Thomson free on the left, with his deflected shot winning a corner. Smith again found Ballinger
in the 42nd minute with a defence splitting ball, but Ballinger's cross was just a little too high
for Thomson at the far post.
Frome came straight out of the blocks in the second half, as Ballinger's low shot brought a
save from Allaway in the first minute, and one minute later his low right wing cross only just
evaded Thomson at the far post.
Frome were totally dominant now, with Smith, Osman and Perrott running the midfield,
Ballinger and Thomson creating mayhem on the wings, and White always finding space in the
centre, goals were always going to come, and the third arrived in the 70th minute as Smith
broke on the right wing, looked up and produced an inch perfect cross that White met first time
with his left foot from 15 yards, the ball ending up in the top corner of the net.
Frome made it 4-0 in the 76th minute as White was clattered on the edge of the Abingdon
area, and Brigham hit a low, hard free kick into the wall, the ball took a deflection and left
Allaway with no chance as it spun viciously into the far corner.
Thomson produced a mazy run that led to the fifth goal in the 84th minute as he turned his
defender inside out before looking up and producing a perfect lofted chip that allowed
Ballinger to easily bundle the ball in at the far post.
It was very nearly 6-0 in the 90th minute as White broke free and shot low from 15 yards, the
ball struck the base of the post, ran along the goal line and past the far post, and as Smith
arrived he hit a left foot shot from a very tight angle that was blocked on the line by a
desperate defender.
So, an excellent performance by Frome and after a period where goals were hard to come by,
this match suggests that the corner has been turned and that the play off positions are now
looking very possible.
Ben Osman was chosen as man of the match for a very good performance in midfield and
follows on from a very good match last week.
