A week is a long time in football, and in contrast to the previous Saturday's 8 goal romp,
Frome were thankful for a quality Chris Lewis strike in the 89th minute to rescue a point from
a match where they just never got going.
With Ryan Bennett stepping in for the injured Jamie Cheeseman and Steve Perrin making a
guest appearance in goal (as both Frome's goalkeepers are injured), the match kicked off on a
cool, still afternoon with the sparse crowd hoping for a repeat of the previous weeks goal fest,
but it wasn't to be.
Bishop's Cleeve played a solid back four playing a high line, and with a packed midfield,
Frome struggled to make any progress, and the first half hour saw both goal keepers as
interested bystanders as the teams cancelled each other out in midfield. Frome's first real
chance came in the 27th minute as an Evans back heel set Hulbert free for a run on goal, but
his left foot shot sailed past the far post, and apart from a Hulbert header at a corner that was
cleared off the line in the 43rd minute, the first half produced little of note.
The second half start in a similar vein, with both sides failing to produce any moments of real
quality, and the only chance in the first half hour came in the 56th minute as Ballinger cut in
from the right wing and produced a low cross to Murray, with a defender just managing to get
a toe to the ball and deflecting it for a corner.
A thunderstorm rumbling round the horizon possibly reflected the mood of the crowd as
Bishop's Cleeve had obviously not read the script and took the lead in the 81st minute as a
long throw from the right wing was flicked on by Alsop allowing the unmarked Sykes to volley
the ball low into the corner from 15 yards.
The crowd hoped that the goal would spark life into the home side, and they did look a bit
livelier afterwards. A long Brigham throw in the 84th minute was turned back to Perrott, but his
mis-hit shot from 15 yards out was easily dealt with by King, and Evans did well in the 88th
minute to get to the dead ball line, but his low cross was again cleared by the visiting defence.
Most people in the crowd had by now consigned themselves to it just being one of those days,
but with a minute to go substitute Chris Lewis chased an Evans through ball, made a yard on
his marker and hit a glorious left foot shot cleanly into the far corner of the goal to make it 1-1,
much to the relief of everyone involved with the club.
Club Chairman Jeremy Alderman (who had sponsored the match) presented Chris Lewis with
the man of the match award, because that one moment of magic had given the crowd a
reason to go home smiling...
