Match Reports Season 2010 / 11 Saturday September 18th 2010 Mangotsfield Utd. Home Sat 18th Sept 2010 Zamaretto Southern League Div 1 (SW) Frome Town 2 Mangotsfield 0 Frome Scorers: Thomson (47), Evans (78) Mangotsfield Scorers: None Crowd: 224 Entertainment Value: 4 Star Man: Dean Evans After a quiet start, Frome Town produced an excellent second half performance, and goals from Thomson and Evans led to a very good 2-0 victory over high flying Mangotsfield Utd. Darren Perrin kept the same team that had lost by the odd goal in five during midweek at Totton, and the match started quietly with both teams getting the feel of the match and Mangotsfield probably just shading the possession and territory. Chances at both ends were few and far between, and apart from the odd long range shot there was nothing of note in the first half hour, but Frome were starting to show signs that they were increasing in confidence and Perrott especially was showing the willingness to run with the ball and attack the opposition, causing others around him to grow in confidence. The first real chance of the match came in the 35th minute as Etheridge played the ball out to Lake, and a perfect swinging left wing cross was met at the far post by the head of Evans, but the ball just missed the post and ended up in the side netting.  Chitty did well in the home goal to save low from Meaker three minutes later, but Frome went straight back up the pitch and Perrott produced a superb right wing cross that begged to be knocked home, but just managed to evade everyone in the penalty area. The last few minutes of the match saw Frome increasingly getting on top, and Perrott was again involved as a good passing move led to Thomson shooting just over the bar just prior to the half time whistle. Frome were first out of the blocks in the second half, and Evans and Lake combined well on the left to enable Lake to produced a testing cross that Greaves could only just punch away under pressure, but the ball immediately found its way to Perrott who attacked down the right, got to the dead ball line and pulled the ball back low to enable Thomson to score at the far post with his second attempt and give Frome a 1-0 lead. The Frome midfield and attack now started to knit together for their best performance of the season, and with Lapham, Evans, Peters and Perrott starting to find time on the ball and space to play in, Thomson and Etheridge started to get very good service up front. The 66th minute saw Lapham and Thomson combine several times to carve open the Mangotsfield defence, but the final ball of the sequence was just a little over-hit. Mangotsfield reacted to the game with a triple substitution in the 69th minute, but the 78th minute saw them go 2-0 down as Frome produced a gem of a goal as Thomson was set free just inside his own half and produce a mazy run that saw him shake off the attentions of three defenders, eventually ending at the dead ball line and producing the perfect low cross to enable Evans to thump the ball home from 12 yards as he arrived at the far post. Max Etheridge immediately made way for new signing Darren White, and the striker picked up a yellow card within seconds of his arrival as he fouled direct from the kick off, but he certainly made an impact on the game with his tackling and physical presence. The 82nd minute saw him worry Hendy into losing possession, and his left foot shot /cross flew agonisingly along the goal line before going out. White brought a save with a low 20 yard shot in the 88th minute and his left wing cross in the 95th minute saw Winter poke the ball over the bar from close range, completing a very promising debut. Mangotsfield certainly went looking for something from the game in the closing stages, but with Chitty commanding at the back, and the Frome defence performing well as a unit, chances were generally limited to long range shots and Frome were the worthy winners, boding well for the visit next Saturday to Havant and Waterlooville in the FA Cup.
