Match Reports Season 2010 / 11 Thursday April 28th 2011 Mangotsfield Away Thursday 28th April 2011 Zamaretto Southern League Division 1 (SW) Play Off Semi Final Mangotsfield Town 1 Frome Town 3 Frome Town Scorers: Evans (4), Perrott (9), Ballinger (40) Mangotsfield Scorers: Colborne (75) Crowd: 732 Entertainment Value: 5 Star Man: Darren Chitty In the biggest match of their recent history, Frome Town booked a place in the playoffs final against Sholing as they made it a hat trick of victories over Mangotsfield this season with a top drawer performance that saw them leading 3-0 at half time, and finally winning 3-1 after Darren Chitty saved a second half penalty. On a cool night, a large crowd of 732 waited expectantly, and as the match kicked off with Frome playing up the slope, the match started fairly sedately, with both teams getting the feel of the bumpy pitch. However, Frome's first attack of the match led to the opening goal, as Brigham produced a super length throw form the right touch line. Heads went up, and the ball found its way out to Ballinger who stooped low to head the ball back towards the goal, the ball arrived at Evans with his back to goal, but he produced a neat back heel from 3 yards out that left Greaves no chance and Frome had the perfect start. Frome's second goal arrived in the ninth minute as Perrott produced a right foot cross from the left wing that was curling just inside the the far post, and as various players went up for the ball, everyone missed it, Greaves was wrong footed, and although he managed to get despairing fingers to the ball, it found its way into the corner of the net from a full 35 yards out to send the massed ranks of Frome fans behind the goal into a delirious state at the 2-0 score line. Frome continued to look dangerous and in the 14th minute they went close again as a lovely passing move involving Perrott and Evans led to a low ball that enabled Ballinger a shooting chance but the ball just skimmed the far post. Mangotsfield went close in the 15th minute as O'Sullivan evaded three tackles and shot, but Chitty showed his class and produced a brilliant diving save to deny the forward a goal. Two minutes later and Chitty was again in action, this time denying Page with a one handed save as he burst between Cheeseman and Flockton. At the other end, Greaves saved a screamer of a free kick from Brigham in the 20th minute, and Frome were a little lucky to escape in the 30th minute as a free kick swung into the area produced a goal mouth scramble that saw the ball chested off the line by Peters. As the match moved towards half time, the pace slackened a little, but Frome then made it 3-0 in the 40th minute as Thomson swung in a left wing cross that Greaves came to take, but he collided with a defender, the ball ran free and Ballinger gleefully slammed the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards to send the massed ranks behind the goal into realms of ethereal ecstasy. The second half saw a different game, with Frome seemingly content to sit back, protect their lead and invite  Mangotsfield to come at them, and all was going well until the 59th minute when a cross from the right wing led to a volley that cannoned against the outstretched arm of Josh Brigham, and the referee pointed directly to the penalty spot. Mangotsfield's Arndale took the penalty, but Chitty guessed correctly, dived to his left and parried the ball out and then reacted quickly enough to save the following shot and push it away for a corner. At this point, the Frome fans just knew that it was going to be their night. Frome continued to soak up everything that Mangotsfield could offer, and although they had a lot of the game, the Frome counter attack always threatened to hit them on the break, however, Mangotsfield did reduce the arrears in the 75th minute as Colborne rose high to power home a header from a right wing cross. The last quarter potentially could have turned into a real nail biting affair, but it never really happened, and Frome held out easily to book their place at Sholing on Monday. At the final whistle, the players celebrated with the large contingent of travelling supporters and looked forward to the big one. Darren Chitty was chosen as man of the match for an excellent match with saves at crucial times.                 Frome Town Mangotsfield Officials Kyle Tooze Tom Knighton Michael Baker Daine O’Connor Sam Alexander A Quelch S Scott I Douglas Danny Greaves Neil Arndale Rob Moore Harley Purnell Gary Colborne Scott Hendy Matt Groves Geraint Bater Mitchell Page Sam O’Sullivan Karim Rendall Match Sponsors Clive Lewis Financial Ltd.
