Match Reports Season 2010 / 11 Saturday March 19th 2011 North Leigh Home Sat 19th March 2011 Zamaretto Southern League Division 1 (SW) Frome Town 8 North Leigh 0 Frome Scorers: Ballinger (6), Brigham (26p), Perrott (47), Thomson (51)& (87), Lewis ( 66), (71) & (75) Crowd: 179 Entertainment Value: 5 Star Man: Ben Thomson Frome Town sent out a clear message to the other play off contenders as they produced a superb six goal second half performance (including a nine minute hat trick from substitute Chris Lewis) that tore apart North Leigh's defence, resulting in an 8-0 victory over a side that had impressively won at Sholing during the week. On a glorious Spring day, the match started quietly with no hint of the drama to come, but then Frome opened the scoring in the 6th minute as Thomson picked the ball up in the centre circle, then set off on a mazy run that saw him evade four challenges before playing the ball low to Ballinger who took one touch to push it into the penalty area then hit a low right foot shot into the corner of the net from 15 yards. The game then settled into a fairly even affair, with both sides looking dangerous coming forward, and several long range shots clearing the bar at both ends, but then Frome increased their lead in the 26th minute as a clearance from visiting keeper Lonsdale fell short and allowed Perrott to head the ball back towards the penalty area. Hulbert was the first to react and as the ball bounced just inside the area, he attempted to head the ball past the committed Lonsdale but was caught round the neck by the keeper's outstretched arm, resulting in the immediate award of a penalty and a yellow card for the goalkeeper. Brigham hit the penalty low and hard, but Londsdale did well to dive and save the penalty, only for it to rebound kindly to Brigham who had time and space to roll the ball into the net for the second goal. The remainder of the half again saw few chances, and at half time, the Frome fans were content with a 2-0 lead as chances had been few and far between in the first 45 minutes, however, they didn't have long to wait for the third, as, two minutes after the re-start, Hulbert did well to chase a through ball, played it out to Thomson on the left wing who produced a perfect cross for Perrott to hang in the air and head the ball home from 10 yards out. Frome were rampant for the next ten minutes or so, with Ballinger and Thomson causing all sorts of problems on the wings, and the pressure paid off in the 58th minute as Ballinger cut in from the right wing, drove the ball low across the penalty area, a defender slid in to clear the ball but only succeeded in playing straight onto Thomson and the ball flew straight into the net to make it 4-0. Chris Lewis replaced Ricky Hulbert in the 61st minute, and North Leigh entered a period where they started to apply some pressure on Frome, but then in the 66th minute, Frome counter attacked, a through ball led to Lewis being completely in the clear and he kept his nerve to drive the ball under Lonsdale for his first goal for the club, and to make it 5-0. Five minutes later and Lewis again showed his class as he collected a Thomson left wing cross with his right foot and then drove the ball home with his left from 10 yards out to make it 6-0. His hat trick and Frome's seventh goal came as he chased a through ball and lobbed Lonsdale perfectly in the 75th minute, with a nine minute hat trick from a player who had only been on the pitch for fourteen minutes. Amazing stuff. North Leigh tried hard to get a consolation goal as the minutes ticked away, but the Frome defence were as tight as ever, and the final goal arrived in the 87th minute as a right wing corner found Osman on the edge of the penalty area. He cut inside and laid the ball to Thomson who flicked the ball up and volleyed it home from the edge of the area to provide the fitting end to a man of the match performance that had caused North Leigh problems all afternoon. Ray Pearce, the match sponsor presented Ben Thomson with the man of the match award for a truly mesmerising performance .      Frome Town North Leigh Officials Alfie Saunders Simon Futcher Andy Caton Terry Merriman Tom Franklin S Tomlinson J Balcombe J Hollier Adam Lonsdale Sam Elkins Mike Hopkins Toby Clarke Stuart Huxley Stuart Hole Brian Bowles Joe Burnell Matt Taylor Josh Dutton-Black Kieran Sanders Match Sponsors Ray and Margaret Pearce
