Match Reports Season 2010 / 11 Tuesday January 18th 2011 Taunton Away Tues Jan 18th 2011 Zamaretto Southern League Division 1 (SW) Taunton Town 1 Frome Town 0 Frome Scorers: None Taunton Scorers: Vance (37) Crowd:140 Entertainment Value: 2 Star Man: Josh Brigham After last weeks heavy home defeat by Almondsbury, Frome Town looked to bounce straight back to winning ways as they travelled to Taunton Town, but a first half goal by Jon Vance sealed the win for Taunton in a game which Frome never really looked like getting anything from. With inspirational captain Jamie Cheeseman and midfield dynamo and top scorer Dean Evans suspended for this match, this match always threatened to be awkward, but Frome were glad to welcome Dean Flockton back from a hamstring injury and Matt Peters took over the captain's armband for the night. After the soaking of the previous days, the pitch looked a bit bumpy but remarkably dry, and with the temperature hovering around freezing, the game kicked off quietly with both sides struggling to put together any dangerous moves, but as it settled, Taunton started to get the better of the midfield and the Frome defence started to have to work hard to keep the scores level. Darren Chitty dealt well with a viciously swerving long range shot in the 15th minute, then had to be alert to pluck the ball off the head of Blake in the 24th minute. A Taunton 25 yard free kick a minute later brought the save of the match from Chitty as the ball was hit with pace and swerve, requiring a flying save to just tip the ball over the crossbar. The resulting corner produced a header just past the post and travelling support were starting to get a bit uneasy by now. As Taunton continued controlling the midfield, Peters just managed to block a goalbound shot in the 33rd minute, but the writing was on the wall, and in the 37th minute a Frome attack faltered and Taunton made ground down the right wing, the low cross eventually finding the head of Vance who scored with a diving header into the corner of the goal to give Taunton a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal stung Frome into action a little, and Ballinger started to make things happen as he produced two right wing crosses just before half time, the first finding the head of Thomson who headed over the bar (after a suspicion of a push in the back), and the second found the head of Toby Osman who headed over the bar as he arrived at the far post. With the 1-0 half time score being an accurate reflection of the half, the travelling Frome fans waited to see if the recent trend of goal-fests in the second half (both good and bad) was going to be repeated in this match, and Frome did look a bit sharper at the start of the half as Toby Osman charged down a kick from Astley that resulted in a Ballinger shot that was deflected for a corner, but a goal kick was given. As the half progressed, a pattern became established with Frome trying to launch attacks, but Taunton easily breaking them up and launching counter attacks that always looked like they would increase their lead. Luke Ballinger was replaced by Darren White in the 62nd minute , then manager Darren Perrin was "sent from the pitch" in the 64th minute as he expressed his opinions too forcibly to the referee. Taunton went close from counter attacks in the 69th and 70th minutes and things were starting to look bleak. Ricky Hulbert replaced Ben Osman in the 75th minute and 4 minutes later Frome's only shot on target of the night came as a mazy Thomson run across the edge of the Taunton area led to a low, 20 yard time right foot from White shot that was going into the far corner until Astley dived full length to just tip the ball round the post for a corner. The last ten minutes saw Taunton play "keep ball", and as they played out time close to a Frome corner flag, frustration got the better of Josh Brigham, something happened and the referee showed the Frome defender a red card in the 94th minute. All in all, it was a bad day at the office for Frome. The defence looked pretty solid with Ryan Bennett playing well alongside Dean Flockton, but the midfield and attack seemed a bit jaded with inspiration, movement and passing accuracy a little lacking. Josh Brigham was chosen as man of the match for another solid performance at right back and looking to make things happen as he moved forward into midfield.    Frome Town Taunton Officials Match Sponsor Silver Spoon Catering Danny Lane Alexis Piper Craig Veal Corey Lewis Phil Veal xxxx xxxx xxxx Match Ball xxxx Chris Astley George Painter Luke Cole Chris McGrath Tim Legg Jon Vance Andy Butler Ross McNab James Blake Rodney Marsh Darren Rice Mascots xxxxxx
