Saturday March 10th  2012 Barwell Home Saturday March 10th 2012 Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Frome Town 1 Barwell 0 Frome Scorers: Thomson (87) Barwell Scorers: None Crowd:  222 Entertainment Value: 4 Star Man: Matt Smith Frome Town’s long wait for a home win finally came to an end thanks to a late Ben Thomson goal that earned a 1-0 victory over Barwell, though if Frome had taken half of their first half chances the margin of victory would have been much greater. Frome started very brightly in this important match, and the 10th minute saw Ricky Hulbert break free on the left, get to the dead ball line and lob Liam Castle, but the ball flew wide of the far post.  A carbon copy break 3 minutes later saw him pull the ball back low into the area, but somehow the line of the ball dissected the runs of the attackers and the chance went begging. The 17th minute saw a superb first touch from Matt Smith saw him swerve past his marker and advance on goal, but this time Castle produced an excellent save to deflect the shot for a corner. At this point in the match, Frome seemed to be able to carve open the Barwell defence at will, and time after time, this created openings, but the final shot or cross always seemed just miss or just evade its intended target. The 36th minute saw Smith chase a ball into the box and go down under the challenge of Castle, but with the home crowd screaming for a penalty, the referee saw it differently and produced a yellow card for the Frome midfielder. The 40th minute saw a great Mike Perrott through ball land perfectly for Hulbert, but once again the lob over the advancing keeper just cleared the far post, and 4 minutes later a Hulbert cross from the left flew across the face of goal with nobody there to take advantage. A lovely cushioned header from Hulbert into the path of loan signing Chris Allen saw another good save from Castle as this time he managed to deflect the ball for a corner with an outstretched leg, and just before half time, it seemed as if it wasn’t going to be Frome’s day as a clear handball by a Barwell defender went completely unpunished. The second half saw Barwell start with a bit more urgency, and the 47th minute saw a lob bounce of the top of the Frome crossbar, and with Barwell starting to get more possession in the Frome half, it was all started to feel a bit ominous.   As the half progressed with still no score, desperation started to set in, the match became a little scrappy and apart from the odd half chance, it looked more and more destined to be a goalless draw. Frome kept trying, but the incisive football of the first half was becoming a distant memory and a lot of balls starting going up in the air instead of being played along the ground. A  Hulbert backheel in the 61st minute land on the top of the Barwell cross bar, and an Allen free kick curled in from the left wing was headed just wide of the post by Smith in the 83rd minute, but as the clock ticked down, the crowd just knew that it wasn’t going to happen. Luckily, nobody had told Ben Thomson that, and in the 87th minute, he cut inside from the left wing, crossed low with his left foot and then with his right foot, drove the return from Hulbert low into the far corner of the net to ecstatic cheers from the home support. Barwell went searching for the equaliser in the dying moments, but with Darren Chitty rarely troubled in the home goal, Frome picked up a priceless three points in their bid for survival in the premier division, and the general feeling is that 6 more points from the remaining 10 games should be enough to ensure that survival.
