Saturday March 24th  2012 Cambridge City Home Saturday 24th March 2012 Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Frome Town 1 Cambridge City 1 Frome Scorers: D. Evans (18) Cambridge Scorers: Hammond (24) Crowd: 244 Star Man: Alex Lapham Entertainment Value: 4 Frome Town produced one of their best home displays of the season, but after an even first half with one goal each, a sparkling attacking display in the second half just failed to produce the winner that they richly deserved. After Ricky Hulbert had a 6th minute header disallowed for offside and Josh Brigham had risked de-capitation by getting his head to a goalbound volley,  Frome took the lead in the 18th minute as a Luke Ballinger corner was curled towards the near post where a Cambridge defender just managed to flick the ball across the goalmouth for Dean Evans to drive the ball home from close range. Cambridge equalised six minutes later as the Frome defence failed to deal with a long throw from the left that was flicked cross the box and Craig Hammond had a relatively easy task to score from six yards out. Cambridge's goal seemed to inspire them, and a period of pressure led to the ball being scrambled away at the far post just before a fracas broke out in the Frome area, however, order was restored quickly and no yellow cards were shown. The rest of the first half seemed even and a little scrappy, and with Cambridge probably having the better of things, Darren Chitty was called into action in the 36th minute to tip an overhead kick from Hammond over the bar, and then on the stroke of half time, he saved well as a free kick was pulled back for Adam Marriot to shoot low. The second half saw Frome attacking the Clubhouse end, and with "captain for the day" Ricky Hulbert playing his last game for Frome before leaving for New Zealand, the crowd were willing him to sign off with the winner, and the Frome team were obviously intent on the same thing. The first twenty minutes of the second half saw Frome comfortable in midfield and mounting several promising attacks that never really came to anything, but then the experienced Sam Allison came on in the 68th minute to play alongside Hulbert, and things really started to click into place.   A long Tom Evans throw was flicked on and Hulbert did well to cross the ball across the face of the goal where Mike Perrott rose well but directed his header over the bar. The 72nd minute saw Hulbert challenge Cambridge keeper Zac Barrett in the area, the ball fell to the ground and Hulbert played the ball back to Allison, but Barrett reacted quickly and did well to save the goalbound shot. The 74th minute saw another Tom Evans throw flicked on by Perrott and this time Dean Evans arrived at the far post only for his "tight angle" header to hit the far post. The 80th minute saw Hulbert and Allison again combine to create a shooting opportunity for Dean Evans, but a deflection took the ball away for a corner and then Luke Ballinger shot just past the post as the ball was swung in. Hulbert almost managed his goal in the 83rd minute as a smart back heel from a throw in found Barratt in exactly the right place to save, and a minute later a Perrott through ball allowed Hulbert a shot on goal, but the ball cleared the bar by a couple of feet. Dean Evans shot straight at Barratt from 10 yards after being set up by Hulbert, and just as it seemed that Frome were destined not to get the winner, they were thankful to Josh Brigham for heading the ball off his line as Cambridge mounted their only dangerous attack of the second half in the 89th minute, with the pressure only really dissipating as Dave Theobald shot just wide of Chitty's post from 30 yards. The whistle blew soon after, with Frome unlucky not to take all three points, and the crowd and the Frome team gave Ricky Hulbert a standing ovation for his part in Frome's success over the past few seasons. Alex Lapham was chosen as Frome's man of the match for the second time in two matches for an excellent display playing in front of the back four and prompting many of the good movement on display in this match.  Members of Frome Town Supporters Club (who had sponsored the match) presented him with his award at the end of the match.
