Monday January 2nd  2012 Chippenham Away Monday Jan 2nd 2012 Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Chippenham Town 1 Frome Town 1 Frome Scorers: Smith (25) Chippenham Scorers: Powell (90+2) Crowd: 657 Entertainment Value: 4 Star Man: Matt Smith Frome Town made three impressive draws on the trot over the Christmas / New Year period as a first half Matt Smith goal gave them a lead that they so nearly hung onto, with Chippenham only claiming a share of points with a 92nd minute equaliser from Lewis Powell after Frome had been reduced to ten men in the 75th minute. A torrential downpour before the match left the pitch just about playable, but it was obvious that the Hardenhuish slope was really going to favour the team that were kicking down it, and with Frome doing so in the first half, they started well, as Matt Smith immediately set up Luke Ballinger for a low cross that Will Puddy did well to hold. Ricky Hulbert had the first real chance of the match in the 7th minute as a Ben Thomson cross enabled him to take two attempts on goal, but Puddy again did well to smother the ball. As the match settled, Frome looked the more dangerous of the two sides and Mike Perrott had a golden chance in the 16th minute as he hit a half volley just wide of the far post from 15 yards out,  and after more Frome pressure, they took the lead in the 25th minute as a left wing corner was curled into the boc, Perrott flicked on at the near post and Matt Smith half volleyed the ball in off the underside of the bar from a position just inside the penalty area. Frome continued to have most of the play, but Chippenham struck back in the 32nd minute as Alan Griffin outstripped Dean Flockton and let fly with a shot that Darren Chitty did well to push away for a corner. As the match moved towards half time, Chippenham started to come more into the match and the Frome defence had more to do in the last five minutes than in the previous forty, but they looked comfortable and the 1-0 scoreline in Frome's favour at half time was a fair reflection of the match to that point. Playing down the slope, Chippenham announced their intentions immediately as they took the game to Frome and a Griffin header flew just past Chitty's post in the 47th minute, and Lewis Powell shot across the face of the Frome goal five minutes later as he found time and space in the penalty area. Frome had a half chance in the 60th minute as a great Smith through ball only just allowed Puddy to beat Ballinger to the ball, and a throw in immediately afterwards gave a shooting chance that went begging, but then Chippenham really turned the pressure up and only a great Chitty save in the 68th minute followed by a last ditch Dean Flockton interception a minute later kept the home side at bay. A strong block tackle from Josh Brigham caused controversy in the 72nd minute as the tackle looked good from the sidelines, but the home players reacted strongly and  a melee erupted that saw Brigham receive a straight red card with Ballinger and Toby Osman both receiving yellow cards for their parts in the affray. Down to ten men again, Frome immediately took off Ricky Hulbert and brought on central defender Ryan Bennett, and a break by Ballinger in the 77th minute set up a shooting chance for Perrott, but the ball ended rather weakly in the midriff of Puddy.  Chippenham immediately counter attacked and only a very brave save by Chitty at the feet of a forward persevered Frome's lead. As a new heavy shower started to soak the pitch and the players, the match turned into a cauldron of pressure with Chippenham throwing everything at Frome, players slipping and sliding and the ball like a bar of soap, and just when it looked like Frome would hold out for a famous away win, Chippenham finally got the equaliser as a good right wing cross from Ross Stearn was headed into the far corner of the net by Lewis Powell in the 2nd minute of stoppage time. Matt Smith was chosen as Frome's man of the match for yet another tireless, inspired performance in midfield.    Frome Town Chippenham Will Puddy Iain Harvey Greg Tindle Toby Osman Steve Casey Alex Kite Andy Sandell Ross Stearn Lewis Powell Alan Griffin James Guthrie Ashley Williams Dave Gilroy Shaun Lamb Nathan Rudge Mani Randhautra Officials R: D Leach A: N Evans A: B Whitty Match Sponsor xxxxxxxxxxxxx Ball Sponsor xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Match Photos Photos of this match taken by our expert photographer Chas Hadfield can be viewed by clicking on this rectangle
