Saturday February 18th  2012 Hitchin Town Home Saturday 18th February 2012 Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Frome Town 0 Hitchin Town 0 Crowd: 186 Star Man: Matt Smith Entertainment Value: 3 Frome Town were left to rue missed first half chances as they were held in a goalless encounter by Hitchin Town on a heavy pitch that had become saturated with several hours of heavy rain just before the kick off. After a slow start, Frome started to look the more dangerous and in the 9th minute, Dean Evans and Ben Thomson combined well to allow Thomson a shot that was saved by Martin Bennett in the visitor's goal. In the 15th minute, a mazy  Thomson run set up Dean Evans to cross from the left, and his second attempt was perfect and was met at the far post by the head of Matt Smith and only a point blank save by Bennett denied Frome the opener. Bennett again did well a minute later as he saved low in the corner from an Alex Lapham shot after he had been set up by Ricky Hulbert. Mike Perrott and Hulbert combined well in the 21st minute to enable Hulbert to turn and cross wit Bennett well out of his goal, but the ball evaded everyone and the chance went begging, and then a superb Lapham through ball seven minutes later allowed Mike Perrott to shoot from close range, but again Bennett was equal to the task. Darren Chitty did well to save low from the dangerous Zak Burke in the 32nd minute, and then the match entered a spell when Hitchin seemed to have most of the ball in the Frome half, but the defence never really looked under any real danger, and the only talking point towards the end of the first half was when Bennett came out of his goal to chase the ball out of play, only to realise that a quick Frome throw would leave him stranded, at which point he strangely developed a bad injury that held play up, repaired itself very quickly, and duly enabled him to take his place in the goalmouth as the throw was taken.  The second half turned into a very even affair with the pitch making flowing football difficult, and most of the action taking place in the midfield. Neat interplay by Hitchin on the left wing allowed Tom Pepper to hit a low shot into Chitty's midfield in the 55th minute, and the Callum Donnelly blazed the ball high and wide from 25 yards in the 65th minute, but both sides were struggling to make an impression on the opposing defences. John Frendo flicked a header wide of the Frome goal in the 77th minute, and the a Hitchin break in the 82nd minute was only just foiled by a Ballinger tackle at the last minute as the winger ran the length of the pitch to get the decideing tackle in. A  crisp, low  Lapham 25 yarder in the 86th minute was well saved for a corner by Bennett, but the second half  never really looked like either side was going to find the breakthrough goal, and so it proved. Matt Smith was chosen as man of the match by sponsor and committee member Neil Clark and was presented with the award for another hard working performance in midfield.         Frome Town Hitchin Martin Bennett Tony Fontennelle Tom Pepper Laurie Stewart Dean Gilbert Louis Lee Zak Burke Callum Donnelly Inih Effiong John Frendo Ieuan Lewis Marc Leach Luke Gregson Stewart King Colby Adams James Edgerley Officials R: A Newell A: R Goodwin A: M.
