Saturday October 13th 2012 Hitchin Away  Saturday 13th October 2012 Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Hitchin Town 2 Frome Town 0 Frome Scorers:  None Hitchin Scorers: Frendo (28), Stewart (69) Crowd: 311 Star Man: Dean Flockton Entertainment Value: 3 If Frome’s shooting accuracy had matched their endeavour, then they might well have earned something from this match, but it was the home side that took their chances, goals win matches and Hitchin Town took all the points with a 2-0 victory. The match started with Frome having a lot of possession, and Ben Wood reacted quickly in the 2nd minute to steal the ball, but his shot went stratight at Bennett in the home goal. Two minutes later and a teasing right wing cross from MIke Perrott saw home defender Gilbert head straight to Matt Smith, but this time the shot flew past the post. Hitchin took the lead in the 28th minute with their first real attack, as some neat passing through the midfield allowed John Frendo to score with a composed finish. Frome took then took the game to the hosts, and Wood shot high over the bar in the 37th minute after Alex Lapham had played him into space, and then the 37th minute saw an incredible miss as Dean Evans managed to shoot high over the bar from 6 yards out after the ball had ricocheted around in the Hitchin penalty area . Frome started the second half well, with Wood always causing problems on the left wing, and the 52nd minute saw him control the ball well, leave a defender for dead and shoot as he advanced on goal, but a deflection took the ball wide of the post. Lewis Powell very nearly connected successfully with a Wood cross in the the 56th minute, but again the final effort went wide. Darren Chitty was brought into action for the first time in the 65th minute as he held a low drive from Stewart, but then HItchin upped the tempo and he was forced to save bravely from Frendo a minute later and only a combination of desperate lunges from defenders kept the deficit at one goal. Tom Evans was forced to clear off his own line in the 69th minute, but the writing was on the wall and Hitchin’s pressure duly led to a second goal a minute later as Lewis' shot from outside the area struck a post, Dean Gilbert's follow-up was parried by Chitty, and Callum Stewart eventually bundled the ball over the line. With twenty minutes to play, Frome went looking for the elusive goal, and the 84th minute saw Claudio Herbert shoot high over the bar after Lapham had pulled the ball back to him, and the afternoon was summed up as Lewis Powell headed home Lapham’s freekick, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Right at the end, Herbert did well on the right to produce a perfect cross onto the head of Dave Gilroy,  but somehow the effort managed to clear the crossbar from a distance of three yards, and the match finished soon afterwards. The “H&B Tyres Man of the Match” award was awarded to Dean Flockton after another  solid display at the heart of defence.     Frome Town Hitchin Officials M. Foley S.
