Frome Town took a while to adjust to the tempo and pace of the premier division, but then
settled and came away with all three points from their first ever match at this level, thanks to a
34th minute goal from new signing Kyle Tooze
The match started with Bedford much quicker out of the blocks and with Frome struggling to
adjust to the pace and tempo of the match. An early cross from Bedford's Gareth Price was
headed back across goal by Wes Lewis and only a timely clearance from Dean Flockton
prevented Frome from going behind. Price again caused problems in the 8th minute as
managed to set Drew Roberts clean through, but luckily for Frome, he shot high and wide.
Frome's first attack came in the 11th minute as Mike Perrott found Ben Thomson in space, he
initially lost control, but then regained it and his cross to Tooze resulted in a first time shot that
went wide. Dean Evans had two shots blocked by desperate defenders in the 13th minute,
and then Bedford again went close three minutes later as Lewis headed a Price cross straight
at Darren Chitty.
A period of Frome pressure in the 17th minute from a Josh Brigham free kick led to Jamie
Cheeseman going close with a header. The resulting corner was cleared by a defender, but
only as far as Tooze, who produced a stunning volley from the edge of the area that was just
tipped over the bar by Ian Brown.
Frome took the lead in the 34th minute as another Brigham / Cheeseman combination led to
Tooze and Brown going up for the ball, Brown dropped it and Tooze was left with the easiest
of tap in goals, much to the delight of the away contingent, but to the expected howl of protest
from the home team and supporters.
Tooze again went close in the last minute of the half, but this time the shot went just wide from
the edge of the box, and Frome went in at half time satisfied with a 1-0 lead.
Much of Frome's success last season came from grabbing an early goal and being able to
defend that lead until the end, and this game proved to be no exception, with very few
chances occurring in the second half until the 85th minute when a 25 yard free kick from
Bedford's Gavin Hoyte thundered straight into the chest of Chitty.
Frome had a golden opportunity to increase their lead in the 91st minute as an excellent run
by Tom Evans led to him being found by Twine Plummer, but his final shot flew high over the
crossbar.
An excellent result from Frome in their first ever Southern Premier game, and they showed
that while it may take time to acclimatise to the tempo in this division, the squad is well up to
the challenge.
Frome's left back Tom Evans was chosen as man of the match in another excellent,
committed display from the Frome side and defence in particular.
