Star Man: Ricky Hulbert
In front of their lowest crowd for many a year, Frome Town comprehensively beat Cirencester
Town 4-1 in an entertaining open match that saw Ricky Hulbert re-discover his scoring touch
with a well taken hat trick.
On a wet night and with Frome seemingly playing a fluid back three, and Lee Davidson
playing more as a wing back on the left, Frome had a chance to take the lead as early as the
3rd minute as Davidson found himself through on goal, with only a good low save from Kevin
Sawyer preventing the opening goal.
Shaun Benison should have opened the scoring for Frome in the 8th minute as his diving
header from a low Luke Ballinger cross skimmed across the face of the goal from 6 yards out,
but four minutes later, Frome took the lead as Ricky Hulbert latched onto a ricochet and
clinically slammed the ball home from 15 yards for a well taken goal.
Frome made it 2-0 in the 30th minute as a Ballinger acrobatic effort thudded against the
Cirencester crossbar, and as the ball came down, Tom Evans was first to react and directed a
low header towards the corner of the net from 15 yards out, with Hulbert claiming the goal as
he helped the ball across the line from close range.
The match turned into a good, clean contest, with both sides playing the ball on the ground in
the slick conditions, and Cirencester almost reduced the deficit in the 41st minute as Jon Else
cut in from the left wing, evaded two tackles and let fly with a right foot shot that brought a
good diving save from Ed Quelch in the home goal.
Frome started the second half well, with both Ballinger and Mike Perrott going close in the first
couple of minutes, and Hulbert could have increased his tally as he latched onto a poor back
pass in the 59th minute, only for his low shot to go past the far post.
Frome made it 3-0 in the 69th minute as Ben Thomson went on a mazy run across the box,
his chipped through ball seemed to catch the defence out and Lee Davidson was able to
make the ground and slide the ball into the net from a tight angle. Thomson could well have
increased the scoreline in the 75th minute as Hulbert did really well to outstrip his marker and
pull the ball across the face of the goal, but as Thomson arrived, his close range shot found
the spot where the goal keeper should have been ..... but in fact still was, and Sawyer
produced a point blank save.
The fourth goal (and Hulbert's hat trick) arrived in the 86th minute as Ballinger got to the dead
ball line, and hit a hard low ball across the face of the goal that Hulbert bundled in from very
close range.
Strangely, the last few minutes of the match saw Cirencester lay siege to the Frome goal, with
Ed Quelch seeing more action in than in the rest of the match, and he was comprehensively
beaten by a 25 yard shot from Adam Mayo that scorched into the top corner of the goal in the
90th minute to give Cirencester a deserved consolation goal.
