Frome Town earned a valuable away point with an excellent performance at joint league
leaders Leamington thanks to a goal just before half time from Matt Smith
Frome had the first chance after 6 minutes as Tom Evans headed a Kris Miller corner over the
bar, but Leamington immediately came back as a Jacob Blyth diving header just failed to
connect with a cross from Stephen Morley after an impressive build up.
As the match settled, there was little to choose between the two sides, and Frome were
unlucky not to take the lead in the 11th minute as a Mike Reaney throw was mis-kicked by Asa
Charlton allowing the ball to strike the home cross bar, but then Frome were relieved in the
25th as a hopeful cross from James Mace completely deceived Darren Chitty but thankfully
the ball bounced just past the far post.
Shaun Benison was put clean through on goal in the 35th minute by the hard working Dean
Evans, but the final shot left a lot to be desired, but then Frome deservedly took the lead four
minutes later as Matt Smith leapt majestically to power home a header from a perfectly
delivered Miller free kick, which they easily held onto until the half time whistle.
Ben Thomson replaced Miller at half time, and the early pressure came from Leamington as
two shots were blocked and then Blyth headed wide from a corner, but then Frome missed a
glorious chance in the 52nd minute as Luke Ballinger and Mike Perrott combined well, with the
latter's perfect cross being headed over the bar by Shaun Benison.
With Frome having missed the chance to make it 2-0, one minute later Leamington made
them pay as they equalised from a left wing corner as Blyth headed home after a rare miss by
Chitty at the near post.
Having equalised, the hosts really started to apply pressure on the Frome defence as they
looked for the winner. Blyth headed a cross from Mace back across goal in the 55th minute,
Richard Batchelor headed over from a corner in the 67th and then Luke Corbett headed wide
from close range after a cross from Mace, but the Frome defence held out and then Thomson
and Hulbert combined to set up a shooting chance for Ballinger, but the ball looped easily into
the air.
The last ten minutes of the match saw Frome penned into their own half with Leamington
winning a succession of corners and applying continuous pressure, but they held out against
everything thrown at them, and Chitty produced the save of the match right at the end as he
arched backwards to tip away a lob from Lee Downes that was heading for the goal.
Dean Evans was chosen as man of the match for another hard working display in which he
covered every blade of grass on the pitch.
