Frome Town finished their pre-season friendlies with a lively 2-2 draw at Paulton Rovers that
saw both sides keen to come away with the bragging rights in this local derby.
On an excellent pitch and a cool, still evening, the match kicked off with Frome playing up the
slope and Paulton having the better of the opening exchanges. Ben Cleverley was just denied
by an excellent last ditch Flockton tackle in the 5th minute, and then Frome responded in the
15th with a Miller run that led to a left wing corner which presented the unmarked Flockton
with a far post header that failed to hit the targer.
Paulton still looked the more dangerous though and Dan Cleverley just failed to connect with a
free kick in the 17th, and a poor clearance in the 19th led to a Paulton lob just missing the
target. Ex Frome player Chris Lewis had a very good chance to open the scoring in the 27th
minute, but lasted wide from 15 yards after a good run from Dan Cleverley.
Frome started to apply pressure at the Paulton end after this, but they went behind to a soft
goal in the 38th minute as a mix up between Chitty and Flockton led to the ball running into
the path of Loxton who had the easiest task of rolling the ball into an empty net to open the
scoring.
The second half was only three minutes old when Paulton increased their lead with a clasiic
route one goal. A long clearance from Drewitt ( on loan to Paulton for this game) was flicked
on by the head of Dan Cleverley into the path of Loxton who scored easily with a low shot
under the body of the diving Chitty.
At 2-0 down, Frome now threw caution to the wind and the game developed into a good end
to end affair, with Frome's reply coming three minutes later as a Miller shot was charged
down, the ball was worked out to the right wing and full back Matt Ralph produced a shot /
cross that sailed over the head of Drewitt and into the far top corner of the net.
Kris Miller started to cause the Paulton defence problems with his pace and control, and a
swerving shot in the 54th minute just evaded the far post, and two minutes later he was again
denied by Drewitt. He was on target in the 66th minute though, and, following a corner,
produced a left foot shot from just outside the area that beat Drewitt after taking a slight
deflection.
At 2-2, both sides went for the winner, and either could have won it. Darren Chitty was called
into action in the 71st and 81st minute to produce good saves, and Frome went very close in
the 84th minute as White got to the dead ball line and produced a cross that Plummer and
Mundy just failed to bundle into the net at the far post.
So, a draw was a fair result on the night, with the match played in a good spirit but with both
sides keenly contesting every ball.
