Frome Town progressed to the next round of the Somerset Premier Cup after beating Paulton
Rovers 1-0 thanks to a well taken goal by Matt Smith that decided a match that was full of
good football, but with both sides tending to cancel each other out, strangely lacking in
attempts on goal.
Frome changed their side round considerably, with Tom Evans moving from left back to centre
back and Lee Davidson coming in at left back for his first start of the season. Alex Lapham
and Matt Smith started together in midfield and with Ricky Hulbert still unfit due to an ankle
injury, Shaun Benison and Twain Plummer started together for the first time as twin strikers.
The first half showed how evenly matched the two sides were, with good football being
played, but few incidents of note. Kyle Tooze and Luke Ballinger were attempting to make
things happen on the wings, and the 18th minute saw Tooze cut inside from the left but his
shot cleared the bar by a long way. Twain Plummer brought a save from Kyle Phillips in the
30th minute as he bravely got his head to a corner, and a minute later a lovely through ball
from Lapham set Ballinger free, but his slightly scuffed shot was easily saved.
The Frome defence seemed comfortable dealing with any Paulton attacks, and at half time,
the 0-0 scoreline was about right, with neither side having the upper hand in either territory or
possession.
The second half saw Frome more active on the left wing, with Tooze starting to combine well
with Shaun Benison, but the final shot or cross always seemed to go well wide or high without
troubling Phillips.
Frome's best chance of the night almost produced an own goal as a left wing cross was
headed towards his own net by Ollie Price and the ball would have buried itself in the net but
only an acrobatic save by Phillips managed to push it away for a corner.
It was looking like the match was destined to go to extra time and maybe penalties as these
local derbies tend to do, but then Frome won the match in the 73rd minute as Mike Perrott
attacked with pace into the Paulton area. As he drew the defenders, he was able to square the
ball to Smith who drove a low right foot shot into the corner of the net from just inside the area
for a very well taken goal that lifted the crowd.
Once in front, Frome never looked like losing the lead, and other half chances came along but
generally ended up in the stands, and with Alex Lapham almost scoring from a 30 yard free
kick that was just tipped over the bar in the very last minute, the match finished with Frome
good value for their victory.
Alex Lapham was awarded the man of the match award.
