As the start of the season gets closer, the intensity starts to build and Frome and Salisbury
played out an excellent 1-1 draw in a match that could well have been a league match as both
teams really wanted to win it. With Salisbury playing their first team squad (minus two
regulars), the match showed how far Frome have progressed in the last few seasons.
Frome started the match with what could very well be their starting line up for the first league
match and immediately got into their stride as a Brigham right wing throw was just headed
past the near post by Tooze after 30 seconds. As the game progressed, Frome were really on
the front foot and after a 6th minute Evans volley fizzed over the bar from the edge of the
area, Frome took the lead in the 10th minute as a left wing corner gave Perrott a shooting
opportunity and he struck the ball sweetly into the corner of the goal from the edge of the
penalty area.
Frome kept up the pressure and Hulbert just kept the ball in as he raced to the dead ball line,
his cross found Tooze and the volley from 15 yards just skimmed the crossbar in the 13th
minute. Three minutes later, a long range Perrott effort just cleared the bar, and then Hulbert
volleyed the ball into the net in the 31st minute but was denied by an offside flag.Salisbury
had their first real chance in the 41st minute as Anderson cut inside Cheeseman but put the
ball wide form 15 yards.
Both sides stayed almost the same at half time, but Salisbury seemed to have decided that
this was a game they should take seriously, and Frome were put under pressure for the first
ten minutes, with Kelly missing a golden chance in the 51st minute as he headed over from 10
yards.
Frome looked dangerous on the break, and Evans brought a good save from Puddy in the
51st minute, followed by a Tooze run on goal the left two defenders in his wake, only for
Puddy to save well low to his left.
Frome made seven substitutions around the 75th minute and by this time the game resembled
a full blooded league game, with Salisbury doing their best to score but being thwarted
continuously by the Frome defence. Their equaliser did eventually come in the 81st minute in
a slightly bizarre way as a Frome clearance struck the back of Dean Flockton and the ball flew
straight into the net giving Quelch no chance.
Both teams looked for the winner and the frenetic pace continued to the end, but a draw was
probably just about a fair result based on the two differing halves, leaving both sets of
supporters satisfied with a good evenings entertainment. Frome were also pleased to
welcome HRH the Crown Prince Schwebomim of Burma as a special guest for the match, and
the rumour is that his highness thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
