Frome Town made it six points out of six in the Premier League as a very good match saw
them run out 2-0 winners in a match that was a tale of two penalties.
Darren Perrin kept exactly the same squad that had won at Bedford on Saturday, and if the
team were a little slow to start then, they came out of the blocks very quickly in this match with
a long range shot from Dean Evans going past the post in the 3rd minute.
The first twenty minutes of the match saw an even affair, with Frome marginally ahead
territorially, but with few chances being created. Kyle Tooze and Ricky Hulbert combined well
in the 26th minute, but an offside flag brought an end to the move.
Controversy erupted in the 31st minute as Supermarine's Mitchell Bryant seeming to go to
ground very easily in the penalty area after a seemingly fair challenge by Dean Evans, but the
referee pointed to the spot and booked Evans for his protests. Substitute TJ Bohane strode
up to take the penalty, but his shot went too close to Darren Chitty who reacted quickly and
produced a brilliant save, only for the rebound to go straight back to Bohane who managed to
sky the ball high over the bar from several yards out.
The incident certainly raised the passions in the match, and Frome went close in the 34th
minute as a Mike Perrott 20 yard volley was just tippped over the bar by Kauppinen in the
visitors goal, but then Supermarine hit a purple patch for the last five minutes of the match,
with Bohane miskicking after being set up by Wells, Chitty saving well in the corner in the
40th minute and Josh Brigham just saving the situation with a last ditch tackle a minute later.
The home crowd were well pleased with the 0-0 scoreline at half time and the second half
started with a pacy affair that saw Supermarine with most of the play, but Frome looking very
dangerous on the break. After 61 minutes, Darren Perrin brought on Shaun Bennison and
Twaine Plummer in place of Kyle Tooze and Ricky Hulbert, and both were to play key roles in
Frome's win.
The second penalty of the night arrived in the 64th minute as Plummer cut in from the right,
pushed the ball to Bennison but was then bundled over as he attempted to get to the ball. The
referee waved play on, but the linesman flagged for the penalty which was given, and Josh
Brigham thumped the ball low into the net to give Frome the lead.
The match definitely moved up a notch after this, but both defences looked solid until the 82nd
minute when Frome increased their lead. A left wing Frome corner was cleared as far as Tom
Evans, who then produced a peach of a pass that found Bennison on the right wing. Bennison
took on and beat his marker, cut inside and then pulled the ball back perfectly for Dean Evans
to sidefoot the ball into the net from ten yards out.
A perfect goal with which to make the match safe, and although Supermarine still went looking
for a consolation goal, Chitty was never troubled for the remainder of the match and Frome
ran out worthy winners.
