Frome Town progressed to the quarter finals of the Somerset Premier Premier Cup after
winning 4-2 at Wells City in a very open, attacking match that could easily have had a much
higher scoreline for both sides.
Frome survived an early scare in the first few minutes as Tom Manning put the ball wide from
12 yards, but then Frome had the ball in the net in the 9th minute as Ricky Hulbert headed the
ball over the advancing keeper, only for the offside flag to rule the goal out, but two minutes
later, Chitty had to be alert to dive at the feet of Liam Black who was clean through on goal.
Frome took the lead in the 12th minute as Hulbert burst to the dead ball line, and perfectly
pulled the ball back for Shaun Benison to side-foot home from 12 yards out.
The match developed into a fluid, open affair, with Frome playing a back three that especially
allowed Wells space to attack on the left wing, and a cross from this side led to the unmarked
Murray miskicking from 15 yards with an open goal beckoning. Wells deservedly equalised in
the 40th minute as Murray was taken down in the penalty area and Manning converted from
the spot.
The second half was just as open as the first, and more goals always looked likely. Luke
Ballinger hit the bar direct from a corner in the 58th minute, and the game was now an "end to
end affair", with either side looking capable of scoring. A Ballinger long range free kick was
just saved under the bar in the 68th minute, and then Frome eventually won the game with a
burst of three goals in the space of five minutes.
They made it 2-1 in 73rd minute as Hulbert volleyed home after a Tooze header had
rebounded off the underside of the Wells crossbar, 3-1 in the 75th minute as Ballinger scored
in the top corner of the goal with a 30 yard direct free kick, and 4-1 in the 78th minute as a
Hulbert run into the box produced a penalty that Ballinger drove into the corner of the net.
To their credit, Wells never stopped trying, and Chitty produced a sharp save from Randall in
the 86th minute, but was powerless to stop Liam Black shooting into the corner of the net from
just inside the penalty area a minute later, to make the score 4-2.
The match finished with a flurry, as Ballinger almost repeated his long range free kick goal in
the 88th minute, then Hulbert hit the post with a left foot volley in the 90th, and Tooze brought
a good save in the 92nd minute after being set up by Ben Thomson,
Ben Thomson was chosen as Man of the Match by the Frome Town Committee.
