It might have been the night after bonfire night, but Frome and Weston produced a veritable
firecracker of a match which eventually ended with a superb 4-3 victory for Frome, thanks to a
hat trick from Lewis Powell, and if he hadn’t been substituted, he could well have had a very
rare hat trick of penalties as well.
With Conference South side Weston fielding a full strength side (very similar to the side that
dumped Frome out of the FA Cup this year) it was clear that they were taking the competition
seriously, and with Frome’s defence consisting of a centre back pairing of Matt Smith and
Dave Thompson (playing together in those positions for the first time this season), the away
fans could have been forgiven for being perhaps a little apprehensive at the start.
The match started quietly, with Weston having a lot of possession and playing neat, passing
football, but with no real penetration to trouble the Frome defence. Frome were struggling to
get possession and seemed to have trouble maintaining it when they did, but their first real
attack of the match led to the opening goal in the 19th minute as Ben Wood went on a mazy
run and ended it with a long, low shot that Lloyd Irish could only parry away into the path of
Dave Gilroy who had made a lot of ground to get into position. As he set himself to let fly, he
was floored by a defender, the referee pointed to the spot, and Lewis Powell made no mistake
as he drove the ball low into the corner to give Frome a 1-0 lead.
Weston equalised eight minutes later as a long ball was headed back weakly by the Frome
defence, and Nabi Diallo produced a supreme piece of skill to chip the ball over the defence
and the stranded Ollie Chenoweth into the Frome net. They took the lead three minutes later
as another good passing move ended with a goal as the ball came in from the left to land
between Chenoweth and Matt Smith. As it bounced, Diallo was in the mix as well, and it
appeared that the ball took a touch off of the prostrate Smith and went into the goal, although
from another angle, Diallo might have got the final touch.
At this point, it seemed as if damage limitation might be the name of the game as Weston
were definitely in the driving seat, but then it seemed as if Frome had decided that attack
might be the best form of defence, and they started taking the game to their hosts with some
of the best “pass and move” football played this season.
They were unlucky not to get another penalty in the 34th minute as Powell seemed to be
definitely pushed as he attempted to get on the end of a cross, but nothing was given, and
although there were no more goals, Frome were definitely the better side in the period leading
up to half time.
The second half started as the first had ended, and Frome pressure brought a second penalty
in the 53rd minute as a goal bound Mike Perrott shot hit the outstretched arm of a defender,
and Powell levelled the score with his second penalty of the night, struck in exactly the same
place.
Powell completed his hat trick nine minutes later as Dean Evans stepped over a through ball
from Perrott and Powell turned superbly on the ball and shot low and hard into his favourite
spot in the corner of the goal to give Frome a 3-2 lead.
Chenoweth again showed his class in the 63rd minute as a great save denied Weston an
equaliser, but then six minutes later, Frome made it 4-2 as Ben Wood again did well on the
left, pulled the cross back to a point close to the penalty spot, and Perott showed sublime skill
to get over the ball and volley a thunderous shot past Irish and into the goal.
Claudio Herbert replaced Powell in the 74th minute, and in the 85th minute, as he chased a
Gilroy through ball, he was clipped from behind by a defender and Frome were awarded a
third penalty on the night. Gilroy took this one, but it was hit hard at a height that gave Irish a
chance, he guessed right and pulled off a good save to deny Frome their fifth.
Westin really turned up the heat in the last few minutes, and brave defending by their entire
Frome team kept them at bay until the 93rd minute when Chenoweth brought off a stunning tip
over save from a deflected shot, only for the unmarked McClaggan to head home the resulting
corner.
That was the last action of the match and the Frome fans went home happy having seen one
the best performances of the season from their team
The “H&B Tyres Man of the Match” award was awarded to hat trick hero Lewis Powell for an
excellent all round game.
