Four star ladies score impressive win
Sunday 2nd November 2014
Bristol Ladies Union arrived at the Blindmans Brewery Stadium with high hopes of taking 3 South West
League Premier Division points from hosts Frome Town Ladies but went away a well beaten side after a
whirlwind first half performance saw Frome go into the half time break 4-0 up.
Frome welcomed back top scorer Becky Yeo, influential midfielder Kim Cheffey and also included new signing Zoe
Acutt for her debut.
To be fair Bristol started the stronger and the home back 4 of Edwards, Hyde, Perkins and Isaacson had to be on their
toes in the first 5 minutes to thwart the attacks that came their way.
Frome soon settled into their passing game however and took a deserved lead after 15 minutes when Ali Bryant broke
through on the left and slotted the ball past the Bristol keeper.
This soon became 2-0 when the ball fell to Yeo twenty yards from goal and she screamed a shot into the corner of the
net.
The game was all Frome now and after 30 minutes they went further ahead when Kasey Evans outpaced the Bristol
defence and chipped the ball neatly past the advancing keeper.
On the stroke of half time the game was all but over as a contest as Cheffey muscled her way past a defender and
neatly shot into the corner.
It is difficult for teams to keep up the intensity in the second half when so much on top and this proved the case as
Frome kept on top without really threatening to go further ahead apart from one effort from Evans who smashed a shot
against the crossbar.
All in all a terrific performance though from Frome who are rapidly improving with every game they play.
Depleted ladies narrowly lose at title contenders
Sunday 26th October 2014
Frome Town Ladies FC returned home empty handed from Sundays difficult away trip to one of the South
West League Premier Division title favourites Swindon Spitfires but they were desperately unlucky as they
matched their hosts every bit of the way before conceding the only goal of the match ten minutes into the
second half.
Frome visited Highworth without top scorer Becky Yeo, new signing Zoe Acutt who's paperwork was not completed in
time, and influential midfielders Kim Cheffey, Lucy Dinham, Annie Redding and Elle Saunders which necessitated
giving a senior debut to 16 year old Keira - Leigh Underhill.
The first half was very even right from the first whistle with Frome's front two of Kasey Evans and Emma Garland both
threatening to break through at every opportunity they got but they were well marshalled by the home defence.
Frome's back 4 of Edwards, Hyde, Perkins and Isaacson were also in exceptional form and stifled every thing thrown
at them.
The visitors probably shaded the half and fully deserved to go into the break level.
As has happened in many games this season the Frome players took their foot off the pedal at the start of the second
period and this proved costly as Swindon got the only goal when a striker who looked suspiciously offside managed to
break clear and slot past Hannah Christer in goal.
This was a catalyst for Frome to come back into the game and to be fair they were on top for the remainder of the half
without really threatening the Swindon goal and the home side held on to take the three points.
Ladies topple league leaders with win
Sunday 12th October 2014
Previously unbeaten Gloucester City Ladies arrived at the Blindmans Brewery Stadium on Sunday with high
expectations of taking another 3 South West League Premier Division points from Frome Town Ladies.
Football is littered with wins by supposed underdogs and this match proved to be another in a long line over the years
and Frome manager Tim Davis changed things about by going with a 4-3-1-2 formation and this proved crucial as
Frome put in a scintillating performance to run out convincing 3-0 winners.
The game was all but over as a contest in the first half as the home side scored all their goals.
They took the lead after 15 minutes when Kim Cheffey wriggled past a couple of Gloucester players before hitting a
shot which eluded everybody apart from Kasey Evans who ghosted in at the back post and slotted the ball into the
empty net.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0. Molly Hyde floated in a beautiful free kick and as Gloucester players failed to clear Evans
was on hand to finish neatly.
Shortly afterwards Frome went further ahead as Gloucester dithered in midfield and captain Devon Rich reacted
quickest, strode purposefully forward and thundered a shot which went in off the bar.
The second half saw Gloucester lifting their game but the back 4 of Hyde, Karen Perkins, Laura Duck and Nieve
Edwards stood firm with some resolute defending and on the odd occasions they were breached Hannah Christer in
goal was immaculate.
All in all a fantastic team performance by Frome Town Ladies and easily the best of the season.
Ladies suffer FA Cup heartache in FA Cup loss
Sunday 28th September 2014
Frome Town Ladies FC went out of the FA Womens Cup on Sunday but not until they had put up a
tremendous battle against one of the top teams in the South West, Truro City.
Truro were expected to win the game comfortably after beating Frome comprehensively twice last season and the
odds were firmly stacked against the home side who were missing key players Lucy Dinham, Elle Saunders, Kim
Cheffey and Karen Perkins.
Frome gave as good as they got throughout the early stages and midway through the first half they went in front when
a neat passing move released top scorer Becky Yeo and she made no mistake with her left foot from just inside the
penalty area.
This shocked Truro and they came roaring back and got the equaliser when the home defence got caught out of
position and keeper Hannah Christer was left with no chance.
Level at the interval, ten minutes into the second half a giant killing looked on the cards when Frome were awarded a
penalty and Yeo scored her second.
Sadly the Frome girls made the same mistake again as they immediately lost their concentration and Truro went
straight up the other end and equalised for the second time.
The tie could have gone either way but to be fair to Truro who were physically far bigger than the Frome girls they
began to impose themselves and with twenty minutes left got their noses in front for the first time when scored.
As Frome pressed for an equaliser they got caught again in the dying stages to make the final score a flattering 4-2 to
Truro as the game was much closer than that.
A valiant attempt by the Frome players who are starting to improve greatly as a team.
Ladies into next round of FA Cup
8th September 2014
Frome Town Ladies FC made it safely through to the next round of the FA Womens Cup on Sunday when
they beat their counterparts from Cheltenham Civil Service 2-0 at the Blindmans Brewery Stadium.
Frome went into the game minus captain Devon Rich and midfielder Kasey Evans who were both unavailable and long
term knee injury victims Lucy Dinham and Elle Saunders which meant some positional changes had to be made.
On an immaculately prepared pitch Frome started very positively and soon settled into their neat passing game and
high intensity pressing of the ball style. Chances soon started to come and Ann - Marie Hervey struck the crossbar with
a great shot from outside the area.
Further chances followed at regular intervals as Annie Redding, Steph Isaacson, Naomi Nash. Laura Duck and Becky
Yeo all had good opportunities. Alison Bryant then crashed another shot against the crossbar as Frome looked set to
run riot.
With the ball not going into the net Cheltenham gained some confidence and in their sporadic attacks they looked
dangerous. With two minutes to go Frome finally got their noses in front when Isaacson got the ball on the left, looked
up and curled a beautiful left foot shot high into the corner of the net.
The second half continued in exactly the same vein with Frome flooding forward at every opportunity but Cheltenham
dangerous on the break, and it was the visitors who thought they had equalised when a stinging shot was brilliantly
saved by Hannah Christer diving full length to her left.
As Cheltenham's players visibly tired Frome piled on the pressure and Yeo had several more great chances before she
finally put the tie beyond doubt when she ran on to a through ball and tucked her shot neatly past the advancing
keeper.
All in all a great performance by Frome who have now been drawn at home to Truro City on September 28th in the
next round.
Ladies start league season with home point
31st August 2014
Frome Town Ladies FC commenced their South West League Premier Division on Sunday with a credible 1-1
draw against Downend Flyers at the Blindmans Brewery Stadium.
Frome, who were resplendent in their new home kit gave league debuts to Molly Hyde, Annie Redding and Shannon
Peaty against a Downend team who consistently finish in the top half of the table every season.
Frome started brightly and took the game to their illustrious opponents but things took a turn for the worse after just 15
minutes when influential midfielder Lucy Dinham twisted awkwardly whilst being tackled and suffered a horrific looking
knee injury that caused a lengthy stoppage as a Paramedic was called. This visibly unsettled Frome and within ten
minutes Downend took the lead when a long cross eluded the home defence and prolific marksman Kate Michael
made no mistake smashing the ball past the helpless Hannah Christer.
Full credit to the young Frome side they came storming back and after 30 minutes they had two great chances to
equalise. Firstly Steph Isaacson broke through one on one with the keeper who saved brilliantly and then Redding
skewed her shot wide when it was easier to score.
With ten minutes to go to the half Frome got their deserved leveler when player of the match Kasey Evans broke free
down the right and crossed a brilliant ball for Redding to meet at the far post and smash home.
The second half followed much the same vein with Frome on top but Downend always dangerous on the counter
attack.
The best chance for either team to get the winner came in the last minute when Evans got within inches of scoring but
the visitors keeper made another great block.
All in all a draw was probably the fair result in a game that was a great advert for South West League Premier Division
football.
Ladies complete pre-season with double figures win
Sunday 24th August 2014
Frome Town Ladies FC concluded their pre season preparations at Ilchester on Sunday when they played
Merriott Ladies FC.
Frome went into the match looking to build on last weeks good performance against Southampton and they got off to
the perfect start after just two minutes when a Merriott defender handled a through ball from Lucy Dinham in the
penalty area and last seasons top scorer Becky Yeo slotted home the resultant spot kick. This settled Frome down and
they were passing the ball superbly.
After just 10 minutes they doubled the score when Dinham played a great ball wide to Kasey Evans on the right and
she powered forward before striking a great right foot shot past the keeper. Five minutes later Evans replied the
compliment by putting in Dinham who screamed a shot home. Frome made it 4-0 after just 20 minutes when Yeo found
Ann - Marie Hervey and she finished neatly.
Skipper Devon Rich got in on the act next when she scored following a great pass from Laura Duck and then Yeo
scored her second courtesy of another Evans pass to make the interval score 6-0 to Frome. Fair play to Merriott they
were battling hard and got a consolation goal 3 minutes into the second half as the Frome defenders all hesitated after
a handball was not given.
This spurred Frome on and they took back complete control, scoring goals at regular intervals throughout the second
half. Further strikes came from Elinor Mason (2), Becky Yeo (2), Lucy Dinham (2), Shannon Peaty and Laura Duck to
make the final score 14-1 to Frome.
Positive signs for Ladies in defeat to Southampton Saints
Wednesday 20th August 2014
Despite suffering a 3-0 defeat on Sunday in their latest pre season friendly Frome Town Ladies FC can take
a lot of positives out of the performance.
The match which was played on a magnificent surface at the Blindmans Brewery Stadium saw higher league
opposition and Womens Premier League club Southampton Saints providing the opposition. Frome were missing top
scorer Becky Yeo centre back Karen Perkins and influential midfielder Elle Saunders but had 17 players in their squad.
Starting with a strong line up Fome gave as good as they got in the opening stages and for 35 minutes there was
nothing between the two sides as both fought to gain the upper hand. Frome manager Tim Davis then opted to utilise
the match to give pitch time to all his squad and made four changes. Southampton seized on this opportunity and
scored almost immediately with a towering header from a corner. Three minutes before the interval they got the second
following an impressive build up down the right. The second half continued in much the same vein with Frome rotating
the squad regularly giving equal playing time to as many players as possible. Despite this and the fact Southampton
kept virtually their full strength side on the pitch for the full 90 minutes the visitors could only muster one more goal
midway through the half.
Davis commented, "I was delighted about several aspects of the game. We played really well in the opening
exchanges until I disrupted the team but this was always pre planned to happen and the girls were all aware of what
was going to happen. Fitness levels were reasonably good and we are starting to get over the difficulties of having so
many new players integrating with one another".
