Frome Town U18s 4-2 Melksham Town U18s
Sunday 12th October 2014
Frome continued their impressive start to the season with a hard fought victory in a classic cup tie at
Frome College.
Melksham started brightly but without troubling James in the Frome goal and both teams were trying to play passing
football. After already having one penalty appeal turned down Frome were awarded a spot kick when the Melksham
'keeper brought down a player in the area and Callum duly converted in the 8th minute. Frome began to dominate the
game although Melksham looked dangerous on the break. Scott was released with a perfect pass just inside the
opposition half and ended a fine solo run by rounding the 'keeper and blasting the ball into an empty net. Gilbert
added the third with a neat chip over the advancing goalkeeper and with a 3-0 advantage at half time the tie seemed
to be over. Melksham must have had an inspiring team talk during the break and they came out all guns blazing,
scoring in the first couple of minutes and soon again after to reduce the deficit to one. They pressed and harried the
Frome players, not allowing them to settle on the ball and an equaliser and extra time seemed inevitable but they just
failed to apply the finishing touch. Against the run of play a long pass from the back was met by Callum again who
drove towards goal, riding a couple of last ditch tackles, one of which left him on the ground but managed to recover
to bundle the ball into the net, completing an impressive hat-trick and sealing the game.
Bradford Town U18s 0-4 Frome Town U18s
Sunday 28th September 2014
Despite not performing at their best Frome managed a comprehensive victory away at Winsley.
The compact pitch restricted Frome's normal style of open play and Bradford had the best of the early exchanges
without creating any real chances. A breakthrough for Frome arrived in the 13th minute when Callum, making his
debut, curled a sublime free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner from 25 yards, giving the Bradford
'keeper no chance. For the second game running Frome conceded a penalty shortly after taking the lead which
James saved superbly to maintain the lead. As half time approached Frome won a corner which Joe swung in and
was met with a kung-fu kick by Ryan to leave a 2-0 advantage at half time. Frome began the second half much
stronger and continued to take the game to Bradford creating several chances before Joe got on the score sheet and
Callum finally grabbed his second goal. A combination of good goal keeping and defending kept Bradford out in the
final 20 minutes as Frome began to tire but it was game over by then. Frome Town man of the match was James
Frome Town U18s 5-0 Westbury U18s
Sunday 14th September 2014
Frome started their campaign in style with an excellent victory over Westbury at Frome College.
From kick off it was all Frome and they won a continuous succession of corners and free kicks but were just unable to
produce the final touch. Westbury had little possession early in the game but when they did the Frome defense held
firm and concentrated on playing attractive passing football. The breakthrough almost arrived in the 25th minute when
a perfect cross field ball from Ti split the Westbury defense allowing Shaun a strike on goal which struck the post with
the 'keeper beaten. Seconds later Shaun and Scott combined, setting up George for a cool finish. Westbury raised
their game after the goal and the Frome defense was forced to work hard for the rest of the half.
The second half began in the same vein and some resolute defending was required as Frome struggled to match
their first half performance and Westbury searched hard for an equalizer. Their chance arrived early in the half when
they were awarded a penalty for a pull back in the box but fortunately for Frome the penalty taker put the spot kick
wide of the goal. This spurred Frome into a response and with a few positional switches they reverted to their first half
style and began to dominate the game. Ryan curled a fine second goal in from outside the penalty area and from that
point Frome appeared to have the game well under control. A third goal quickly followed from a rebound and Callum
scored a brace with his shiny new boots to put the icing on a fine performance.
Result aside Frome put on a great display of passing and possession football which bodes well for the season ahead.
Frome Town man of the match was Shaun.
